Have I got everything?
 

Hello,

I have no experience with cable or computers!

I want to sign up for the broadband here (the one on the left):

I have been told that my house was previously signed up with Virgin for broadband, phone and TV. There is currently nothing connected (not even a phone). I just want broadband, no TV, no phone.

Given the above, can some kind soul please tell me if what I think is correct:

1. I sign up for the left hand offer in the page above.
2. A Virgin man(!) comes to connect the broadband.
3. There is a socket somewhere in the house which the man connects a modem to.
4. Virgin supply the modem.
5. Virgin supply the cable between the socket and the modem.
6. I connect a wireless router to the modem.
7. I supply the router.
8. I supply the cable between the modem and the router.
9. The cable between the modem and the router is a standard ethernet cable.
10. This router (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132429) is what I need to buy.

My computer is currently connected to another wireless network, so I'm assuming that will be ok with respect to hardware...just some fiddling with settings.

I want to be sure that I have it all right before I book the appointment...

Alice :welcome:, you may find that the engineer will want to connect the modem directly to your PC first, but connecting up the router after he has gone should be easy.

If you need to do that, follow these these steps.

Power down your modem.
Connect it to your router
Powwer up your modem and wait a few minutes, allowing the modem to gain a new IP address to the router.
Check the router configuration to make sure you have an IP address....if so, BINGO! :)

Nice looking router :) And yes, it will work, perfectly. It is made for Cable/DSL technology.

The wire between the modem and router, should indeed be standard ethernet if i recall correctly.
Virgin Media will actually provide you with this cable, as it comes with the modem.

Everything else you mentioned is perfect. Tot's advice above is spot on :)

Don't be afraid to ask the installer about routers though, they may well, out of the goodness of their hearts install it for you anyway if you ask. Just be prepared for them to say no, as they're technically not meant to ;)
