Homeplug help!
 

Ok well i have the Virgin Media cable modem plugged directly into a homeplug and then fed upstairs to another homeplug - This works fine, no problems at all.

However when i try to connect a second homeplug to another pc the connection will not be established.

I guess this is because i do not have a router plugged in after the modem? I thought that the homeplugs did routing automatically. Any help would be very appreciated.

I have a Netgear DG834G wireless ADSL modem that i know can be somehow transformed into just a router.

Using the surfboard SB5101E modem.

I expect a normal router will be required, please can you give advice on which one to buy, Wireless capability's are a plus but really am looking for a cheap and cheerful product.

You will need a new Router, the ADSL router cannot be used I'm sorry to say

Hey thanks for the reply, i realised the ADSL router cannot be used to route, however it is currently working as a switch with DHCP turned off... But not needed when i have leager 8 port switch :)

You will need a router in between the Modem and the Homeplug (or after the receiving Homeplug but before the PCs) to use more than one at a time

There's probably nothing wrong with the cheapo, but personally I'd go for the Netgear

Though, for an extra few quid you can get one with Wireless http://www.ebuyer.com/product/48546 now you might say "Pah, I dont need that now" but for the extra money its an extra you can turn off and on when you need it

Wireless isnt a problem, i have a station that broadcasts wireless which is under my complete control. Seeing as their is a large enough price increase i will happily leave that option out.

I would not be too fussed about an expensive router. If you can get a cheapish one that also includes a SPI firewall that would be good. Something cheap like this would do the job (USRobotics USR848004) - http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...ProductID=2421 . Cheap but includes firwall and 4 ports.

I have come across these similar problems sharing cable connections as the isp will only allocate one ip address per connect, hence having to use the router to share the address via nat. I used the USRobotics before with eConnect HomePlugs (85's) http://www.econnecthomeplug.co.uk . As its got 4 Ethernet ports you can put a plug in one as well as have three spare ports should you want to connect anything else directly to it.
