Well, Guantanamo Bay is an English protectorate, so our government knew a lot more than they are apparently willing to let on.

Actually, I got it slightly wrong. The land it is on was leased by the English to the Americans in the early 70s.

Erm, that's Diego Garcia, not Guantanamo.

Also, before the UK let the US set up a base there, we first forcibly deported the native population (can't have pesky natives getting in the way of our base, can we).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Garcia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depopul...f_Diego_Garcia

The High Court ruled a few years ago that the Chagos islanders should be allowed to return home, & that the deportation was unlawful.

The Government eventually overruled the Court using orders in council (after having previously, with Robin Cook as Foreign Secretary, said it accepted the court's decision & would find a way to allow the islanders to at least return to the outer islands in the Chagos Archipelago rather than Diego Garcia itself).

The High Court said that was unlawful.

The Government appealed.

The Court of Appeal then found that the Government's actions were "unlawful abuse of power by the executive government."

The islanders have yet to actually return though.

Still, I guess that's another subject...

As for the Government's revelation that rendition flights used UK territory... I didn't really find it very surprising... (well, OK, them actually owning up was surprising, but the actual flights-use-UK-territory wasn't).

We all *knew* this was the case when Jack Straw swore the opposite. Bit of a credibility problem, Jacko...

Strange that with a government so pre-occupied with ID cards and social control that they do not know what is happening on British owned land.

Not that we should be surprised I suppose when we also have:-

a) massive data leaks/losses from various government departments
b) an unknown number of illegal immigrants
c) various uncaptured war criminals & felons
d) prisoners being released earlier through not having enough prisons
e) British & Euro MPs milking the system
f) an incompetent CPS that's soft on crime
g) a government inability to account for EU spending
h) the British people being denied a referendum on the new EU treaty

All this because we have a government that likes to appear to be doing one thing when in reality it is doing another.

It's pretty clear that they deliberately didn't find out, because then they'd lose their plausible deniability. Now, apart from being immoral, that itself amounts to deception in my book.

In other words, oops we've been caught, better start spinning...

No, not shocked just fed up and disappointed that they are not really making an effort to run the country well, just at their convenience and for their benefit.

I think a lot of Labour voters must be feeling very betrayed.

I have the honor and pleasure to say i did not vote for this joke of a Government . I feel sorry for those who voted for this bunch of lying, Cheating, Worthless cretins. The real problem is that Labour went from a bare faced liar to a idiot who has sold us out to Europe and has not even been elected by the public of this country ..
