slow down through router
Hi there, I have just signed up to the 20M and have a slight problem. With the modem plugged straight into my PC I get the full 20M speed but, when I plug modem into wireless router and hard wired from wireless router to PC I get a 45% reduction in speed (even though it is hard wired from router!) the router is a good one (Netgear WPN824) so where could the problem lie? I have had a look around other posts and VM website but nothing I do seems to help.
Anyone any suggestions? Cheers ---------- Post added at 19:03 ---------- Previous post was at 17:18 ---------- Hi, I have found the cause of the problem but I dont understand why at the moment, due to my lack of knowledge in networking. I went into the Netgear router settings online and ticked a box called "Disable SPI Firewall" after doing this my broadband went from 10Meg to 20 Meg. Steve |

:welcome:
If you fancy a google SPI stands for 'stateful packet inspection'. If you don't want the detail, the bottom line is that, as it is an extra process performed by the router, the SPI function can slow down traffic going through it - and apparently with Windows Vista & some routers can stop it altogether |
Re: slow down through router
Thanks very much for that. It seems that it is this issue that is effecting quite a few people on this forum?

Re: slow down through router
SPI is set on quite a few brands of routers, and with some you cant switch it off completely.
