And of course, few years back the UN took control and promised "independence was out of the question"....

I see an awful lot of enraged Serbs who'll no doubt use this to stir up even more trouble. These people have very long memories and I foresee an awful lot of trouble ahead.

As I understand it and in a nutshell - Kosovo is a disputed territory in Serbia the population of which is mainly (c. 80-90%) ethnic Albanian who also feel they have a claim to the area in question. As has been demonstrated very well in the past, the Serbs are a fiercly nationalistic nation and will argue that not only is their territory being stolen but that the Serbian population living in Kosovo will now be in great risk of discrimination and even reprisals for what happened in the 1990's. All in all, it's a tinder box waiting to erupt in flames I reckon.

What did Russia say about this?
And did they veto it?

The UN Security Council went into emergency session on Sunday evening after Russia called for the United Nations to declare the Kosovo declaration illegal.

Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters that the resolution allowing the UN to administer Kosovo since 1999 was still in force so there could be no legal basis for any change in status.

Russia's foreign ministry has indicated that Western recognition of an independent Kosovo could have implications for the Georgian breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The signs are not favourable.:erm:
