I Want A New Router

Hi

My Linksys WRT54G(?) v4 is failing me. I'm having to reset it every one or 2 days as the speeds to it just drop.

When it works it works really well. When it doesn't work, it won't even respond to a ping.

I thought about updating the firmware to one of the 3rd party ones. DDWRT maybe? I also thought about upgrading to 802.11n. I would like to stay with Linksys and firstly looked at the WRT350n. Very nice, available from Ebuyer. Then I saw WRT600n. This also sounds tasty. What I read about it on the Linksys site sound very impressive but I can't find it for sale anywhere.

I know I'm not very patient when searching, but all my usual places don't seem to have this router in stock, some saying that it hasn't been released yet. It was announced at the end of 2006 though (unless the dates are wrong on that website).

So, my questions are...

Where can I get a WRT600N from? Is it available yet? What's the release date? Does anyone else have one (or a WRT350N)? Do they come recommended?

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

If you are convinced your router is on it's way out, you have nothing to loose by trying a third party firmware update. I've been happy with DDWRT on my WRT54GS v2. Indeed it offered a number of extra controls that stabilised problems I was having especially with torrents that just overloaded the thing. There are other third party firmwares too, Tomato I think is quite popular.

Funny you should mention Torrents. Do you think it could be that which is causing the problem? I take it DDWRT solved it for you?

Updating the firmware would be the cheapest option, but I'm also a bit of a gadget freak and like the latest equipment.

If the 600n is not released yet, I think I'll update the firmware and wait for it come out properly :)

Thanks for the comments.

If you are running torrents then yes that could very well be the source of some problems. To work properly, torrent software throws out many simultaneous connection requests, and receives others. The router can get overwhelmed and fails to release the redundant connections swiftly enough.

Thanks for the tips. I've flashed my router now (with the mini version of the firmware).

Had a few problems accessing the config pages but a reset of the router sorted that out. Let's see how it goes now :)

Thanks.

I recommend you contact Linksys direct or one of the recommended Distributors/resellers to find out about the release date normally these manufacturers will give out an date to scare competition.
