Router Issues
 

Hi all,
Please excuse me if I'm posting in the wrong section.....I could'nt choose the relevant area to post, I'm sure the mods will move the thread to its relevant area:cool:

Setting the scene;

I've got a virgin BB cable modem........ Ive got two laptops..... I've also just bought a Linksys WRT53GS Wireless Router......

I've connected the router to the Virgin modem as required........ followed the setup requirements..... the newer lappy of the two has a G technology wireless card which has detected the router through wireless...

The issue is the other lappy, which is older ...it has B wireless technology..... the router can supply both B&G technologies simultaneously, I cannot for the life of me connect the older lappy to the wireless network......

I've searched for the network through its xp wizard guides etc, but no joy.......

the new laptop is vista, G technology as I've stated, finds it no problem......

Any ideas would be great!



further note....... the newer lappy can find even my neighbours BT network....... the older one can't find any!

I'm pretty well versed in most things related to pc's....other than the networking depo.....I rarely deal with the software side of networking, especially CISCO switches, I'm mostly cabling HP PROCURVE switches....hardware side......give me a blade system using CAT5-RJ45 data cables through a blackbox pass-through to Procurve networking anyday.......

Sheer ignorance on my part but hopefully there are a few troopers on her to help x

If the older lappy isn't finding any networks, is the wireless adaptor properly loaded and enabled? Maybe check for new drivers for it? Might also be worth looking to see it isn't blocked by a firewall.

I assume you have setup the Linksys to operate in mixed mode (both b & g speeds). You might need to check it's admin panel.

first of all :welcome: to CF (Rob how rude)

okay, the old lappy do you know what kind of card it has in it? as I have seen issues with old B cards that cant find any G network even if its broadcasting B/G.

other thing it could be is that the wlan on it has been disabled and that you have to enable it, this depands on the laptop on how to do this.

there are about 10 things that could be wrong here....also what kind of security are you running on the linksys? if its WPA-PSK then your B card will not connect to it...only WEP it supports.

Old Lappy card is a .. IEEE 802.11b Wireless MiniPCI Card 7007, driver version is 8.22.50.804, its currently set at use default channel.....card power management off & Wake On Lan off.

all firewalls are off on the laptop......

the card is enabled also, several times I've tried repair in which windows disables the card then enables then attempts to find and connect to a network.....none found in range......laptop is about 1 metre from router. lol

Security next, well the linksys is currently set to no encryption....its disabled for the purposes of trying to remedy this.......


Mode: Mixed 11/54Mbps
SSID: linksys
DHCP Server: Enable
Channel: 11
Encryption Function: Disable

okay....so your other lappy finds network and another 1 in the area but the oldie doesnt find anything.

the drivers I assume are the latest that you can find for it? That card doesnt ring a bell with me, which make is it?

also are you managing the wlan from Microsoft or the utilty that came with the card? (if card utility try microsoft wlan client, to start this go to dos, type in "Net start WZCSVC)

Lets just say......I've solved the problem.....

My new laptop has a switch to activate the inbuilt card.....

the older laptop as far as I knew didn't have a switch ......it has a button next to the power button.....for the life of me I did not entertain the idea that was for the inbuilt card:dunce::dunce::dunce:

very useful info to be found here Gizmo, and yes if you ever have problems then there are enough peeps that might be able to help ya
