do i need a 3g sim for a 3g phone?

My contract has about 2months left on it

however

I was thinking of buying a v800 phone off ebay as im not sure if i want to upgrade with vodafone again (as im not sure i really want to be locked into another 12months)

But will my existing sim work in the v800 and will i be able to access the 3g features?

if nececcery would vodafone supply with with a sim upgrade to be able to use the 3g features without locking me into another 12month contract?

I don't think so - isn't Vodafone's 3G service still data-only?

EDIT: Just checked the Vodafone website, and it seems their 3G service has been extended to voice/video calling now. They might send you a 3G SIM (known as a USIM) for a fee, but I still doubt it - I think it would be too much administration for them! It's worth asking though...

I doubt it as they are Vodafones competitors aren't they? I always thought you needed a 3G phone to have 3G. Sorry I have just reread your post about the phone from Ebay. To be honest I can not see Vodafone doing that

No the v800i is a vodafone 3G phone, your thinking of the network '3'

thats why i was wandering if i bought the phone off the internet wether i could just get vodafone to send me a 3G sim

I had this same phone, the Sony Erickson V800, on a pay-as-you-go sim card from the local vodafone store, and apart from setting it up on the internet setting from contract to pay-as-you-go, it worked 100% on all 3G content.
Sold it a few weeks ago, as I decided it wasn't being used enough, paid £350 for it from Vodafone store, now local Argos selling it for £199.
If you have probs setting it up, just take it into local store, and they should set it up while you wait.
