PS3 Warhawk On-line Gaming on Virgin Media 20Mbits/s Connection.
I've had a PS3 for a wile now (brilliant machine) and recently purchased the Warhawk On-line game, I have to say its great, I highly recommended it!
Now, Warkhawk lets you host a game with your own PS3 as a server, so I gave it a go but soon found I could only host 8 players! Found out after looking around and chatting with people on-line in the game you need a fast BB connection. Well at the time I had a 4 Mbits/s connection with Virgin Media, and never had any problems with any other on-line games until now. But there again I was hosting a game so yes may be thats it I thought. Now 4 Mbits/s is fast enough for most of what I do, and many on-line game too, but I though I might as well get it upgraded, been meaning to for a wile and Warhawk now gave me the excuse I needed! ;) So I called Virgin and got the XL 20 Mbits/s and it was done, checked it with speednet : http://www.speedtest.net/ Got these results : Download : 19600 Kbits/sec or 19.6 Mbits/sec Upload : 701 Kbits/sec or 0.7 Mbits/sec  Great I thought! So I turned the computer off, just had the PS3 on and tried Warhark and went to host a game, but now I can only host 12 players max! There seems to be quite a few hosts in Warhawk managing 24 player games. So why is it that I have one of the fastest domestic BB connections in the UK and can't host a full Warhawk game? Theres only (Be) ISP that I know of that are faster than Virgin Medias XL 20Mbits/s Connection. The only other thing here would be my upload speed, which has doubled, but you would think then that I could have hosted 16 player game though! If it is the case that its the upload, Virgin need to look at increasing it, as they are most definitely falling short in on-line gaming. I mean, 10 Mbits/sec download is well enough for me but it seems I need a greater upload speed, 700 Kbit/sec ain't cutting it anymore, that needs to at least double again! Then so many of us wont be buggering off to be with (Be), there upload is double Virgins by the way! Check this out! I'm loathed to leave Virgin, I quite like them and haven't had too many problems with them, but if they don't do anything soon I'm off to be with (Be)! :D Anyone else had this problem, any thoughts on what I should do to get a faster upload off of Virgin any anyone else, or if you want to chuck your two pennth in or tell me to shut up and get a life please do! :) I'm all ears people :monkey: :monkey: :monkey: :monkey: :monkey: |
Re: PS3 Warhawk On-line Gaming on Virgin Media 20Mbits/s Connection.
Virgin or should I say NTL were probably the best ISP for gaming a while back. The biggest reason I went with them. There pings were great and I always had excellant connections to server's. Since the Re-Brand thing's have slowely gone down hill (For Me). First pings started to rise. Sometimes to an unplayable level because of the lag caused. Secondly the connection would just drop out for an hour or 2 every week or so. Now my 20mb connection picks up just over 1mb between 12pm and 12am.
Just to add to my little rant my Tv service is on the blink with channels dropping out in the morning till late afternoon. Channels breaking up with stutering sound. I am starting to think of leaving Virgin now as I have just about had enough. Unless they fix things b4 I find a better service they may lose yet another customer. Been with them about 4 - 5 years and feel like my loyalty is taken for granted. |

May be I'm very luck in all of this, what Virgin have promised they usually deliver!
But and this is a big but, if they don't up grade their upload speed I'll be off. They can do it, they have the infrastructure to do so, but choose not to, why is that? VIRGIN, FOR ****S SAKE INCREASE YOUR UPLOAD, EVEN IF IT IS TO THE DETRIMENT OF YOUR DOWNLOAD SPEED! GET A NAME FOR YOURSELVES AS THE GAMERS ISP IN THE UK AND ADVERTISE IT! **** YOUR GONNA GET SOME HIGHT USE SUBSCRIBERS OUT OF THAT FOR SURE! Push the limits and tell everyone about it, you have the infrastructure already in place, make some money out of it. Or, we'll be moving on, and thats for sure, believe me! |
Re: PS3 Warhawk On-line Gaming on Virgin Media 20Mbits/s Connection.
Agree Warhawk is a great game, I've been playing it since the day it was on PSN for download and I'm still addicted to it ... I'm only 4500 points away from Commander!
Anyway I just noticed today that the 4mb customers are getting an upgrade to 10mb, with 512 upstream... I thought this might give me the ability to host 12 players, but judging by your post, I'm guessing not. :( |

Keep hoping yours will sort itself out. I know how annoying it can be when you can't get all of the features that everyone else can! |
