Tiny amount of money compared to the amount wasted on consultants and bureaucracy to support the 'market' in NHS services. Under Labour this has risen from 4% to 15% of the cost of the NHS, and those guys aren't doctors.

The sum quoted is from just 4 trusts and yes whilst it is a comparitively small amount of money it's still money the NHS can't afford to lose and it's ironic that something designed to provide additional funding to the NHS has wound up costing money.

I onder if anyone in the NHS or indeed HMG has ever heard the old maxim 'watch the pennies and the pounds take care of themselves'.
