Proxy servers

The Proxy server I am connected to has been a bit flaky for at least the last few years. In the past I used to just manually specify a proxy and get back on the web, but virgin has stopped that now.

Is there a way I can get around this duff proxy? I lose half the net several times a day for times up to 15 mins. During this time, some websites will work, BBC etc, and I can even run a Traceroute to the ones that don't. I have tried with multiple pc's and even an iBook and exactly the same. Email and VOIP still work during these times.

I have mentioned this proxy to NTL/Virgin more than once, but I think it will stay as it is until it fails.

Hoping someone can help. :)

Are you sure they are not using transparent proxy servers? Stinks of a proxy server, as it only affects some HTML traffic

Maybe on the ex NTL network they don't have any proxy servers but http://webcache.blueyonder.co.uk:8080 is still up. There are other ports you can use but I can't remember them offhand.

The ex NTL network no longer force customers through proxy servers. Some of the old servers are still live, but if you want to use a VM proxy, Joxer's post has the correct address.

renf-cache-9.server.ntli.net:8080 still working for me. Seems to do the job when I can't surf.
Interested to know why or if I'm imagining it.
