Wireless Cable Router

I'm about to buy a wireless cable router but the choices and features are daunting! I'm looking for top download speed - 300Mbps+ - to connect to Virgin Media. No particular brand - price not a problem. Any suggestions?

:welcome: to the forum.

I'm not sure what speed the Linksys WRT54G range of routers can go at but I highly recommend it and so would a lot of other people on this forum. :)

Wireless Cable Router

Hi Nikesh

Thanks for the fast. The d/l speed of the model you suggest is 54Mbps and I am looking for something around 300Mbps but thanks for the brand name recommendation. I am checking out their higher end range to see what's available.

thats Megabits per second, and the only consumer grade wireless routers that come close that speed are the newest wireless 11N routers, but thats still a good choice today if your just starting your wireless LAN, as it can easly push even the newest 50Mbit/s Docsis3 VM packages that we are hopeing will appear to all/most users sometime this year.

the werst case reported 11N speeds on the LAN to LAN wireless copying were well above the current VM 20Mbit speeds and potential of the first 50Mbit reported VM package when it arrives.

if your going to buy the cheap and cheerful old 11G grade kit like the WRT54G range ,thats fine ,as long as you know what your getting.

but you need to realise many old 11g grade routers have a far slower CPU inside, and will most likely not give you as good a data throughput speed as a direct connection on the 20Mbit package at least,.

perhaps as low as 12Mbit or less in fact, if the readers tryed and tested reported here and all over the web are anything to go by, but thats to be expected as 11g has a 22Mbit max real throughput anyway, with even the best conditions

save yourself some time and just look at the new 11N routers (not the old pre-N type)and matching client cards to go with it, a good tip is to not mix 11N kit with the old 11g client kit or loose a LOT of data throughput speed.

Re: Wireless Cable Router

Thanks for the advice! Based on responses so far and my own research, I seem to have settled on a Belkin F5D8231UK4 which seems to fit my needs. Just drilling down the best price now. Thanks again! ;)
