Which routers can actually handle 20mbps and over?
 

I currently have a linksys BEFSR41 v4.1, this does have a 10/100 WAN port but I am starting to realise the rated speed of the WAN port has very little to do with the thru put from WAN to LAN. My router cannot handle more than about 12mbps, thats from my own experience but more importantly thats what linksys tech support say, I just spoke to them today. I have been doing a bit of research today to try and find a router which can definitely deal with 20mbps or higher (bearing in mind it might not be too long before we get 50mbps) and once you look beyond the 10/100 rating of the WAN port, very few routers seem capable of handling anything over about 10-14 mbps.

I have a wired network so want to avoid a wireless router if possible(my search has been confined to wired routers only) does anyone know of a router (that does not cost hundreds of pounds)which will definitely, absolutely handle *at least* 20mbps at the WAN port. If it HAS to be a wirless router then fine, I dont have to use the wirless on it I guess. Please remember that just because the port is 10/100 does not mean the router can handle 100mbps, as I said most of them barely get more than 10.

Any ideas? I would be prepared to spend up to £200 as long as it was something pretty decent.

I would think the CPU and RAM would be the bottleneck here

A lot of people here use wrt54gL routers but I have no idea if they handle 20Mbit properly.

Could always build one but it might be a bit power-hungy noisy and probably to pricey.

with upto £200 spending your options are great, dont go buying something like that link you posted though .

its Dual-WAN ,which can be good if you have two ISP accounts and modems ,setting it in bandwidth aggregation mode would get you almost double speeds... but it looks like a very old model, also its not suitable for home user cable needs, and its got lots of options that are almost useless for the home user today.

as iv been saying for a long time now here, what matters most is what CPU speed you have inside your router, the 3rd party firmwares can also help you get better thoughput, as can turning off the security options and moving this security elswere in the lan.

for easyer options and almost garantee a better CPU inside, able to move/provide far more data throughput, what you want to look for is a 1gigabit router,or one of the current 11N wireless routers (not the old pre-N type) that has at least a 4 LAN switch inside, many are 1gigabit/s WAN/LAN but there are cheaper 10/100 Mbit/s WAN/LAN models for around £60.

as you say, you can ignore the wireless (11n)side if you so wish, and just use it as a wired WAN/LAN router.

I have the Linksys wrt54gs and have no problem reaching 20mb at off peak times.

to start readers off take a look at this page and keep in mind the dates of any reviews you read, remembering many things can be changed/improved with an updated firmware today

so far on the face of it, it seems several 802.11n Draft 2.0 routers based on Atheros XSPAN silicon are looking very good at giving reasonable thoughput for the money.

Got the Dlink DIR-655, lovely piece of kit, its made a massive difference, measured a speed of 15.5mbps today, its never been over 10 before, also video streaming from media PC downstairs to xbox 360 upstairs has improved dramatically, no more glitches or freezes.

i had the gaming router and it auto updated to the wrong firmware...damn it! :) was very pretty while it worked.

My router is a BEFSR41 and it handles my 20Mb connection just fine, but it's a V3 not a V4.1

i got a d-link 635 and a belkin usb adapater and can easily hit 20meg

I use the WRT54GS with no problems on 20mb :)

This is a common topic which I think would be well adddressed with a sticky listing 20Mb compatible and non-compatible routers based on users findings.

I did`nt even need a proper router as such in reality because the ole linux desktop/s i had been using did splendid jobs as router/firewall/gateway to the rest of the house.
I really only bought the wireless router as i was buying other stuff for my girls at the time and the router was there on offer.
Cant even remember how much....about £40 i think.

I hav a Sweex RO001 (not wireless) which handles 20mb fine, infact far more than that transferring pc to pc. They only cost about £20.
