can't ftp to upload.virgin.net
I'm trying to create a webpage but can't login to upload.virgin.net, I keep getting "Server responded: 'login incorrect'". I'm using the first part of my email address (ie the bit before the @) as login, using simple ftp (Fetch on a Mac OSX 10.3.9) and I'm 100% certain of my password because I've just reset it.
Anything obviously wrong? Is the system down? Thanks! |

Are you actually on Virgin.net ADSL?

Umm, no, I'm at work. Don't tell me I can't log on remotely...

No you can't not normally. Get some proper hosting from the likes of www.hostforweb.com or someone similar for a couple of £ per month!

Re: can't ftp to upload.virgin.net
It's nothing worth paying for, just personal stuff. But I'm surprised Virgin have anyone using their space with a policy like that. I mean, if I go away for the weekend I can't even access my website!
Years ago I spent some time in France and had pages on free.fr. A couple of years after I moved back to Australia free.fr decided that you could only ftp to their pages if your IP address was in France (didn't have to be free.fr, just physically in France). Imagine the fuss (the French are good at fuss)! I'd been using my pages for teaching and had confidential student stuff there (password protected, of course) but I couldn't even log on to delete it. Didn't last long of course, and I can now use my free.fr webspace sitting here at my desk in London. Fortunately, it seems. |

Anything used that much is worth paying for ;) For a £ or 2 per month you can get some very good packages thanks mainly to the favourable (to us) US exchange rates
