Router questions
3 questions from a novice...
Which one of these routers is any good for a 2 meg adsl connection? Linksys Belkin Netgear How relevant is the data transfer speed? What I mean is it overkill to get the the fastest? I hope that you understand what I mean ;) Also, what is the most secure method for a secured connection? :) |

1) The ones you've linked to seem waaaaaaaaaaaay over priced. 2) Wait for someone more tech savvy :tu: Sorry that's all I can do. |
Re: Router questions
It's actually for my nephew's new laptop. He has had a look and being a kid, seen the data transfer speed and gone for the fastest. I am not too sure if it is necessary or not.
They will be getting it from a high street shop instead of online, so that limits the options on price... Thanks Bop |

Sorry, to be pushy, but can anyone help?

Re: Router questions
tbh the quality of the ones you picked are far to great for a 2 meg adsl connection,
you could just use http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...3&category_oid= this would be right for a 2meg connection, altho a little over priced, |
Re: Router questions
I would suggest something like This - WAG200G router
it's easy to setup, reliable, can be used on ADSL connections up to 24mbit and beyond, supports all major standards. The only downside is it doesn't have a version of DD-WRT or it's equivalents available, and on the current shipping firmware won't support DMT Tools, but that's it's only drawbacks and that won't affect 99% of people anyway, unless you want access to highly detailed line statistics and a linux based router for somewhat specialised purposes. |
Re: Router questions
Thanks for the replies. Another novice question, but what is the best method to security?

Re: Router questions
WPA with a nice long alphanumeric passphrase and enable MAC address filtering...
something like s1llyphr4sesdef347dictionary669968ATTaCk5 - mix capitals and lowercase, insert numbers etc, and the longer the better. |

From what I have learned, one of the best routers for p2p file sharing, speed and stability is the Linksys WRT54GL, as it has a Linux based operating system. Which basically means, you can update the routers software (called firmware) for free, and turn a £40 router into a £300 router. Not all Linksys routers are as good as this though, so pay attention to the model I told you. The chepest price I've found (vat and quick delivery included) I found was £45.96 from http://www.linksys.co.uk/acatalog/Wi...e_Routers.html If you decide to get this router, learn how to install DD-WRT at http://www.dd-wrt.com With this you can increase signal strength and adjust it to allow multiple simultaneous connections to name just a couple of features. |
