XBox360 Diagnostics?

OK, three days before Christmas and the XBox internal DVD drive has failed!
Now it was a Cmas pressie last year, so has been running 362 days, but you look on Xbox.com and it shows as warranty expired 10 Dec  (when I bought it!)
Tried calling support but hitting head against brick wall.
Does anyone know if the 360 maintains records of how long it has been used in the diags? Eg first used 25 Dec 06?
Otherwise it's on to the 360 marketing mgr at Thames Valley Park on Monday.
Happy Christmas from Microsoft

Not sure on this TBH, MS have extended the warranty for the three red lights issues. Is that what you get, or does it just freeze?

Very odd - it will still play CD's just not DVD or XBox games

If you stick a game or DVD in it buzzes for a few secs and then says 'Open Tray' on the dashboard.
There is even an MS article on the problem which helpfully says at the end 'get it serviced by M$' - £60 thank you, unless I can prove it was not unwrapped until 25 Dec.

I think you'll just have to plead with Xbox "support" that they should fix it for free as although it was purchased over a year ago it was a Christmas present so has not actually been in use for a year.[And if they say no... hang up, phone again, & help you get a more helpful CSR].

Wayne - The three year warranty is only for the Red Ring of Death, it won't cover a knackered DVD drive.

Best thing to do is probably force a RROD, if you check other websites wrapping the console in towels can get this done for you! Then you can send it back to MS with no charge!

errm, I thought wrapping it in towels removed the RROD

sometimes and sometimes it creates them, basically it forces the Xbox to overheat melting the solder (Which is the problem that frequently causes the RROD, so im let to believe)

I wouldn't be too suprised if when you got it back they'd only fixed the RRoD and not the drive. If your very lucky they might replace the whole console but considering the number of 360's that they deal with this is unlikely.

As it happens I have a banned 360 with RRoD that I could take the drive out of, obviously it needs a firmware flash (either original or iXtreme 1.4) before being installed but you can have it for the price of postage if you have no joy with M$.

Currently waiting to see if a contact in M$ can infect support with some Christmas spirit. Like the idea of inducing an RROD :D

Just got a call from MS - going to be repaired under warranty :-)
Xmas games will have to wait but we can cope ;-)
