LAN Hard Drive enclosure - set up help needed
 

I've just acquired a LAN hard drive enclosure and wish to use it as a network drive, connected to my BT Home Hub. I've managed to hook up to it using a direct ethernet link to the PC, but I'm not having much joy through the router. I know it must be a DHCP/IP issue but I don't know where to start. Can anyone help?

make, brand, direct URL would be handy but i assume it will have an internal mini web server that you can log into and change its settings for auto or fixed IP and other LAN sharing settings etc.

just plug it into the router,log in to it on its default IP (whatever the PDF says)then set and use a fixed IP in the same range as your current LAN or have your DHCP server (the routers DHCPd perhaps?)give it the IP and check the router to see what it gave it.

The drive displays in the Home Hub control panel but is listed as inactive and doesn't show up as linked. I'm not sure where to start with this one.

we cant help you if you dont tell us the URL to the kit or its make model etc.

i dont know the 'Home Hub' but its going to be something as simple as its not got a valid IP,not set/formated for use or sharing, whats the URL?.

If you have directly connected the drive to your computer with a standard ethernet cable, then to connect it via a router I think you'll need a crossover cable or crossover adaptor. ntl used to give you them with their welcome pack.

Thanks for the replies. Seems that it was as simple as restarting the LAN drive, the hub picked it up as active, then I got straight through via Windows networking.

Its an ADSL router given out by BT when you signup to BT total broadband.

I believe it to be made by thompson for bt.
(someone has successfully hacked speedtouch 7G firmware and gotten it to install on it before)

i asked for the HD enclosure make/model/URL info, NOT the (BT)router/Hub its pluged into lads/lasses....

i still didnt get given the asked for info, even though its working to a degree now apparently, doesnt mean they understand how to get to its internal webserver to change its network/protocol/shares/formatting settings etc.

never mind..., ill just not bother wasting my time trying to help next time.

If its not on the devices list on the homehub or its not working on that IP then either a firewall is blocking it, its admin interface is listening on a non standard port or its setup for a static IP and unless someone has the same model then we're unlikely to know what the default Static ip would be and if anyones ever changed it in the past.

you forget , all devices that have an internal webserver have to have a way to hardware reset the device back to default config .....

but failing that, theres always the FCC ID No. and/or failing even that, then you can use the chipset PCB to identify the required info, if YOUR DUAL HD NAS doesnt identify itself in any way, it would be the first iv ever seen (and iv seen a lot in 27 years working with PC devices)and being dual implys its not the cheapest kit, so it must have a hard reset somewere.

We're not talking about my "Dual hdd nas" though are we, and that is sitting in a box somewhere since I could never get it to run stably with the 2 hard-drives I wanted to use with it.

and yes the dual HDD nas I've got is a cheap piece of junk, It's vastly outperformed by an old p3 with 9quid sata card in it :p:

Someone asked what a homehub was I answered, I also suggested that if it doesn't show up on the homehubs devices list then its not getting a DHCP lease and possible reasons why if it is that it won't be accessible just by clicking on its ip.

well your the one that expanded the thread to include it so apparently we are now.

of course anyone that knows hardware to a reasonable degree will know a good P3 with a SATA controller and drive (finish it off with a gigabit card and router/switch to see its full potential)will easly out perform many of the current ARM/StrongARM SOC (system-on-chip) based single NAS kit, and the better P3's even beat several SBC (single board computer) dual NAS, other than the PPC G3/4 and x86-686 based NAS kit.

a simple FreeNAS iSCSI is currently your better/fastest option on any spare x86 kit today if that suits your needs.

but thats BTP, the main point (since it appears the OPs kit is working to their liking as they didnt reply), is that its easy to identify any kit if your given the right info and can then help others.

btw, i dont see 'Someone asked what a homehub was' in this thread, but your other answers are perfectly valid....

I Missread it, just noticed they said they don't know the homehub not what it was.

Freenas is good but It didn't seem to like my Sata card :( (actually i think its the pc that doesn't its very fussy about addon cards)

Linux didn't seem to care though and its all working...

Haven't put a 1gbit card in yet, did think about doing that but I thought with that and the sata card all that would happen was congestion on the PCI bus.

I'd have to replace the switch on my desk and add 1Gbit/s nics to both machines (my current dtop only has a 100mbit onboard, although the previous one had a Gigabit nic)

My desktop would be the only machine to benefit from the speedboost since the laptops/downstairs machine go over a wireless and powerline link to get there anyway.
