Wake on Lan problem?

Hi,

I have just tried using this program:

http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-gui.aspx

I can get my computer to wake up from hibernation when I am the LAN but when I am away and try to wake the machine up using the internet it will not wake up.

I am behind a router and have enabled port 7 with the local IP address of the machine.

I am using the external IP address and subnet mask given to me by the router the mask is 255.255.252.0 and the MAC address of the NIC on the machine and it just wont work.

Does anyone have any ideas where I am going wrong?

Is your router set for static rather than dynamic IPs?

I would perceive it as being an issue wherein the computer doesn't actually have an IP address unless it's active, therefore the router is unable to effectively route the WoL command to the computer.

From the depicus site:-

If you wish to use Wake On Lan over the internet you will need to set up your destination firewall/router to allow "Subnet Directed Broadcasts". Most routers and firewalls disable this option by default.

Plus, I think you may need to broadcast the WOL packet. The following, again from the depicus site, tells how to determine the broadcast address - basically the network address with the host address as all 1s

1) Convert machine address to binary e.g. 10.208.20.1 = 00001010.11010000.00010100.00000001

2) Convert the Subnet Mask to Binary e.g. 255.255.240.0 = 11111111.11111111.11110000.00000000

3) Invert the Binary Subnet Mask e.g. 11111111.11111111.11110000.00000000 becomes 00000000.00000000.00001111.11111111

4) Or the machine address and the inverted subnet mask e.g. 00001010.11010000.00010100.00000001 Or 00000000.00000000.00001111.11111111 = 00001010.11010000.00011111.11111111 = 10.208.31.255

My router is setup for Dynamic DHCP;

@JohnHorb: Where would I put that information?

So if your WOL machine gets a new IP, port 7 won't be opened...

Actually, I think there is more to it than this. Here is an informative article: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29941/53/

Thanks for the info guys it looks a lot more complicated than what I first thought, I might just leave it and just put a timer on my machine that turns the machine on automatically in the mornings.

If your using Windows, then Task Manager can wake a machine up from Standby/Hibernate, otherwise most PC's these days have an option in the BIOS to wake up at a specified time.
