Looking for a Router with a timer facility.
 

Hi there,

I'm on the search for a router (cable) that has a timing facility to block certain machines (or their ports etc) at various times of the day, mainly to stop younger members of my family spending too much time on the net. We've had an SMC router in the past that had this feature, having browsed a number of manufacturers and review sites I can't seem to find this feature listed anywhere so am not sure which to purchase!

Can anyone recommend something along those lines?

Thanks for all the help. Would rather keep the net connection (Virgin STB) running 24/7 for other machines but not in the kids room so they don't abuse it after bedtime.

In that case: make sure you set a good strong password on the router :)

My old Linksys WRT54GS could do that - you can put access/non-access times by MAC address.

Those routers are just too good. It is a real problem of a product for linksys. They made something that has a long long in use life compared to most technology.
It runs at 100mb so really unless you have a lot of Gb cards again no cause for upgrade and even then how often are you shifting Tbs around a network.

Another vote for the WRT54G (Linksys).

Damn good router, just about bullet proof, and do exactly what you want them to do. You can even filter URLs based on certain key words.....which is nice ;)

Even then you could just put a Gigabit switch between them and the router ;)

P.s if your going to set the access times by mac address just remember that Mac addresses are easily spoofed.
Lock the thing to only allow authorised Mac addresses

Also statically assign IP's by mac address in the DHCP server if possible otherwise they can just clone your mac address and the DHCP server might issue a new IP to the cloned mac (I always thought it was impossible to have 2 devices with the same Mac address on a network but I did it once and it worked).
