DKT-100 problem -- plz help!

Hello,

I recently bought the above wireless package to connect a PC (main computer, Win ME) and a laptop (Win XP) to the internet. However, I am having the following problem: the main PC connects fine via wired connection but the laptop (which has a built-in wireless receiver) does not. When I first established connection via the PC, the laptop could see and connect to the network fine. However, I then used the instructions on the manual that came with the package (DIR-301 Wireless G router, pages 15-17) to configure the router. I started the Setup Wizard, created a new password, selected Dynamic connection, and clicked Clone PC's MAC address. Now the laptop does NOT EVEN SEE the network.

I tried RESETTING, but to no avail. The wireless receiver on the laptop works fine -- it sees all other wireless networks in the vicinity, so the problem does not lie with the laptop. How can I get the laptop to see the network and use it to connect to the Internet?

I'd be very grateful for any advice you might be able to offer.

:welcome: to Cable Forum :tu:

What is the exact make and model of your router and laptop. Your post title says DKT-100 - but that seems to be an ink cartridge according to :google: and DIR-301 just gets a load of chinese writing

I'd suspect you need to do a full factory reset on the router to get it back to default settings. Then make sure you have internet access wired from a computer. There should not then be a need to clone anything into the router. That will just serve to confuse (cloning a PC's mac only assisted a little with Set Top Boxes that required to register a connected device, but that doesn't apply to modems, in any case you can register the router on Set Top Boxers).

You should have access to the admin controls of the router (check the manual - usually a browse to a wepage such as http://192.168.1.1 or similar). In there you should see options for wireless security where you can set the SSID (network identity i.e. mynetname), Security type (choose WPA if available and compatible with your laptop , alternatively WEP), and a password. Then you should just be able to use the lappy's wireless to identify and connect to your wireless router. No CD's or wizards needed ;)

Hi Rob and thanks for your welcome and reply! Sorry, the package name is DKT-110 (not 100 as I mistakenly put it in the thread title  ). Here's the router page on ebuyer.com http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130240

I've tried to reset the router to the factory defaults but nada! I will try switching off, unplugging and then plugging again and switching on in case the reset button has got stuck. When that's done, I'll proceed to set SSID and security type and report back. Just a question: if I set the security setting to WPA (which I think my laptop is compatible with) will the main computer (Win ME) be able to connect to the network?

Many thanks.

Security using WPA , WEP, the SSID settings etc is all for the wireless side of things - stops your neighbour's "borrowing" your broadband, or getting into your home network using wireless. It won't affect the wired (ethernet) connections.
