My router is bottle necking my 20meg connection down to 6meg
 

Hi folks, i have a belkin 4 port wired router with 3 computers running off it. After upgrading my internet connection upto 20meg, i did the speed test and im only getting 6-7meg, if i wire the modem direct to my pc, i get 13+meg. The router is maxxing out and basically i need a better router, does anyone know or use a router that can let the full 20meg through without nicking my speed.

There are plenty of decent routers with a 100MBit WAN Port, I'm sure someone will be along with a recommendation soon.

Personally I use a Linksys WRT54GS with a modified firmware, been using for over a year and works great. Mine feeds a 24 port switch, which than feeds my network. I currently run 2 xboxs, 2 laptops and 2 desktops, on average 3 items are connected at once and I have no connection or speed issues, unless some one is uploading. Can be brought for between £35-£40.

Either that or my mate use the Netgear WPN824 which is also good. Although he has had some issues where IP address keep changing on his network which is a pain when mapping ports. Other than that it is good and has a very good wireless range. More Expensive than the Linksys, about £60.

Thanks for the replies. Only problem is i need a wired 4 port router. The ones you suggest are both wireless.I play a lot of multiplayer gaming batlefield2142 etc and i also download a lot of stuff with azereus so i need a router that wont curl up and die on me. Does 10/100MB mean it is capable of flowing upto 10up/100down?

10 / 100 is the speed of the network port - it can run at either, both upload and download (subject of course to the broadband connection and other software setting on your computer) and usually accepts the faster speed when it connects to another device via the ethernet cable if the other device also offers that faster speed. Occasionally the autosensing goes wrong though.

Most wireless routers, such as the WRT54GS include 4 wired LAN ports. If you are opting for Linksys though, given your P2P desires I'd look at the WRT54GL (linux version). That is designed to be flashed with your preferred third party firmware. That can offer you additional fine tuning parameters in the router configuration. If you don't need wireless for now, you can disable it on most routers. Of course if you don't ever believe you'll want wireless then just get a wired router.

With the WRT54GS you want to know which manufacture revision it is, especially if you need to run your own firmware. Early versions (up to v4 I think) were flashable having enough memory, but if you didn't flash them, heavy torrent use could overload the Linksys own firmware tables (too many connections saturated the memory tables). However Liknsys reckoned they fixed that in later versions, but I don't really know. However the later routers had lesser capacity for firmware upgrades, hence the linux version being released.

If you aren't needing wireless then you certainly don't need Speedbooster which is a wireless enhancement that only works well with other linksys Speedbooster enabled wireless adaptors in your PC>

As for buying though ebay, check you don't overpay - even if it's marked as new do you get any warranty or retunr rights?
