Ipod classic / Itrip music distorting

I am using a Griffin Itrip connecting to my Ipod classic 80GB. Problem is the music distorts when I play it via the radio. On my old 5th generation Ipod this could be corrected by turning the volume down with the click wheel to about 70% but with my new ipod the volume control appears to have no effect on the volume i.e. I can turn it to zero and the music on the radio stays the same. I have tried turning the master volume down on the ipod but that has little impact. Any ideas on where things are going wrong.

Many thanks

Mike
