Advice needed about Heaters
 

I've a corner spare bedroom with the corner facing northeast.We have no central heating and during the winter it is very cold at night.We used to have a fan heater but since it broke down we haven't bothered.However I suspect that this winter's going to be a nasty one so I need a new heater for when my daughter comes home for Christmas.

I've looked in Argos but I'm confused by all the choice.I'm not sure how safe oil fueled radiators are and I just can't believe the choice there is with fan heaters.As I remember it the fan heater we had was expensive and not really very effective.
Can anyone recommend what would be safe,efficient and value for money in a quite small bedroom in a house with no central heating.

Nothing really wrong with the oil filled radiators. No more unsafe than fan heaters. Most should be thermostatically controlled.

Any electrical heater shouldn't be covered. That's when there are real risks of them overheating.

Fan heaters tend not to be that effective, lkie any air circulation based system as all they do is heat the air. You really need something that is running for longer periods, albeit at lower temperature so they can warm the structure.

When I lived up North we lived in a stone cottage on the top of the moors, we had a coal fire for daily use and a fan heater for quick heat when we got in from work with an oil filled rad to provide background heating at night. That may be a little expensive these days though.

I agree that fan heaters are ok for a quick heat up, but they are expensive for a long term solution.

The alternatives are radiator type, or convector type - in my opinion a cold corner will benefit from a radiator, but the whole room will prefer a convector, such as the panels super has linked to....

Oil filled are great. My parents have one - they have no heating at all, other than a gas fire in the living room. I use it when I stay at Christmas - just put it on low before bed, takes the chill off the room.

We use an thermostatically controlled oil filled radiator in our conservatory and its great. Theyre much better than a fan heater and in my opinion much safer as there are no elements open to the air.

A couple of Amiga A500 power supplies used to do the trick back in the day, nice n toasty :D

When I lived in Nottingham I didnt have central heating (had gas in front room tho) so I installed 400w slimline panel heaters in all the rooms, fitted them with timers and they certainly worked. Made by a company called Laser or Lazer and sold by B&Q retailed for around £35 each.

Coggy I think you're a little confused between oil-fuelled and oil-filled. You don't want an old paraffin heater, that's for sure, but I reckon you'd have a hard time finding one of those these days anyway.

In Argos you will get a nice oil-filled radiator. This is a sealed unit with an electric heating element inside. We have one in our spare room which doesn't have a central heating radiator (yet) and it's great, thermostatically controlled and very reliable.

Yup I bung it on low about ten minutes before I head bed, put doggies to bed, and by time I am heading for bed the rooms nice and warm and I just walk in and turn it off by the bed side switch.

Should I need some warmth during night or when I am getting up I can turn it on via the switch right next to my bed.

Another vote for the oil filled rads here, I used 3 to great effect when the heating packed in 4 weeks after buying this house, cheap to run and the ones I had had a timer on them..

I still have one I use for the shower room..
