Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\User>net send 192.168.***.*** testing
An error occurred while sending a message to 192.168.***.***.

The message alias could not be found on the network.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2273.

Re: NetSend

This usually happens when the target computer cannot be found on the network and/or is not listening for messenger traffic.

The obvious one: check that both machines have the Windows messenger service enabled

If you are running third party firewalls then check that they are not blocking ports 135, 1026-1029 for Messenger and 137-139 for Netbios (this may also be presented as an option to block windows file&printer sharing)

You can check which computers you may send a message to by typing the NET NAME command in the dos prompt

Re: NetSend

By default the messenger service is disabled in XP SP2. Most good firewalls will also disable it.
If you are just testing network connectivity, start with 'ping 192.168.x.x'.
