NTL, Micronet SP916GK and Netgear Adaptor

Imagine your granny setting up a wireless network...

NTL cable plugged into modem, blue cable plugged in to router, adaptor plugged into USB on front of PC, adaptor set up with help of NetGear.

I've followed the instructions from Micronet, and have got to typing 192.168.1.1 into the browser but it is having none of it. I know nothing of DHCP(?), or IP addresses (manual or automatic), and WAN interface is double dutch to me! Where am i going wrong? I've spent hours reading other posts and forums but just can't seem to find the answer!

I'm tempted to put it back in the box, take it back to Maplin and pay more for the NetGear one so i can call the 0870 number for support!

Can anyone offer any advice or step by step idiots guide? the manual is written assuming a certain level of knowledge that i just don't have!

If i've missed any key info anyone needs to help me please let me know - running Vista if that makes a difference!

Help. Please!:confused::confused:

OK - :welcome: to CF

Firstly, when you set up a wireless router, you normally need to start by plugging an Ethernet cable between the router and a PC to set it up. You mention an 'adaptor plugged into USB' - I assume this is a wireless adapter. Does your PC have an ethernet port on the back and is it close enough to the router to connect?

How are you able to post on here? By connectiing the PC direct to the cable modem, and if so have by ethernet or USB? Are you powercycling the modem between trying the router and direct connection?

Enough for now.

Hi Aragorn, thanks for replying. I can access the internet when I plug the blue Ethernet cable from the modem directly in the ethernet port at the back of the PC. (Have been on the internet for months this way)

I have a Netgear Wireless Adaptor which has been successfully installed. The problem seems to be when I take the ethernet cable out of the back of the PC and pulg it into the router. (At this stage there is no physical link between the Modem > PC or PC > Router, the only link is from modem to router using the ethernet cable.

The PC can "find" the router and says signal strength is excellent, but I can't actually make a connection - there seems to be lots of settings that the User Manual just doesn't explain.

(I'm sure i've just complicated things further!!)

Can you offer any more advice?

According to the manual I've just downloaded, the web based interface is accessed through 192.168.2.1, have you tried that?

HI, the model i have is SP916GK-7, the manual can be found here:

http://www.micronet.com.tw/up_images...6GK_Manual.pdf

I get stuck on page 8 of the manual (page 11/41)

I access it through 192.168.1.1

1. Operation mode - I choose "Gateway"

2. I choose the correct time zone

3. I specify the IP address and "subnet mask" as per the manual

etc

I seem to get stuck at 3.4 Wireless Setup, I don't know what to put in the Wireless Basic Settings.

I'm going to have one last go and then I will be able to make a note of the error messages and post them up here!!

Thanks

I didn't download the -7 variant.

What model is your Netgear USB dongle?

Re: NTL, Micronet SP916GK and Netgear Adaptor

Netgear set up successfully, but only with a call to their helpdesk. My own wireless at home is a Netgear and this aslo involved a call to Netgear. They seem to have to change settings that just arent mentioned in the user manual and instructions.

I can feel a poll coming on:

"Did you manage to set up a wireless router in less than an hour with no-one else helping you?"

The results could be interesting! lol
