So what does this mean for the ordinary punter?Won't most people wait and see which format has wiped the floor with the other before committing themselves?

The rate they are going, they deserve a 3rd format to come along and wipe the floor with them, maybe using the conventional DVD process with a new codec, since MPEG2 is far from the be all and end all of codecs.

This is exactly why I don't think either Hi Def format will succeed.

There is a 3rd format, The Internet. Space and Bandwidth is increasing, by the time HDTV is standard enough, the internet distribution of video content will be all ready to roll.

That's what is holding the market back. The fact that Joe Soap is waiting to see which format wins.

So in reality this means the format that can provide the cheapest and largest access will be the one that wins...not necessarily the technically best option.

At this rate the wait we face until we get to install a chip in the head and operate all media by brain power alone seems to be a very long way off.

Though it has to be said that sometimes what goes on inside my head is far more entertaining than much of the crap currently on offer.;)

Some fall-out from this...

It's allegedly annoyed Michael Bay so much that he's refused to make Transformers 2

Same thing happened with vhs and betamax - betamax had a better picture quality - but vhs had a longer run time....
