Extend ADSL Router phone cable

Morning all,

If I wanted to move my ADSL router (Linksys) into another room, what's the maximum distance I could run the phone cable?

I don't think it'll need much cable - probably 5m max.

By the time you measure the distance from the BT Exchange to the ADSL Modem, 5m isn't going to make a bit of difference as long as you use good quality wiring and interconnects!

For a 'proper' ADSL extension cable it appears to be sold up to 20m

Cheapest 5m cable I can find is here http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/pid/4051308

I was just going to extend the BT socket to the other room and plug the filter into the extension - or is that a bad idea?

Ah if thats the case then the post recommending you to use good quality wire and interconnects is the right one :D

It could possibly reduce your sync speed if either the cable quality isn't that good it it just happens to make it that Bit to far longer...

Its best to only have wires 2 and 5 connected and NOT have the ringing wire connected, since there's a capacitor in the micro filter this should NOT affect the ability of the phone to ring correctly.

Reason for doing so is the ringing wire can act as a sort of antenna and picks up noise/interference that upsets the ADSL

Depending on the wiring/location though some people not having them connected it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference where as for others having those wires disconnected increased their sync speed quite considerably.
