Wireless Network problems..
 

I have been using Dlan setup (through the Electricity circuit) sucessfuly for 9 months - Cable modem downstairs going into the Dlan socket nearby with a Dlan socket upstairs going into the PC via USB - all perfectly running almost out of the box! I have recently aquired a laptop with a Wireless card - and added a Dlan wireless unit to the setup. After installation of the software - the connection to the Dlan Wireless is detected by the Laptop - but i get "unable to resolve ip address and no connectivity" - i decided to input the Dlan ip manualy - so i entered the IP and Subnet but was very unsure about the DNS gateway. It now connects and has an excellent signal but i cant browse any webpages atall.
My Question is what DNS details do i provide and will this rectify the issue.
I Would be very greatful for any ideas.

P.S - Be aware im not very tech savvy!!!

on your computer that is working.

click start->run
enter "cmd" and press enter
type "ipconfig /all" and press enter

you should now have listed the gateway, subnet, dns servers etc etc
the only thing you should enter different on your laptop is the IP address

If your computer is say 192.168.1.2 you will probably want your laptop to be 192.168.1.3 personally i would use something like 192.168.1.22 or something different rather than sequencial incase of conflicts.

really interested to hear how u get on with this set up, surprised the wireless setup hasn't been as intuitive as i'd have thought.

Do you have a router connected to the modem, as this is required to share the broadband connection. Otherwise only one connection can work at a time.

No i dont have a router connected - is there no way for the connection to be shared?

This where i get confused - the Wireless Dlan device has an ip - do i change that? or the connection in networks?

Does the dlan device have a DHCP server built in?
Is the IP address an internal address like 192.168 or 172. or 10.

Your cable modem will have an public IP address. A router will have an internal address for example you could set 10.10.10.1. This is your gateway/router address. Your desktop and laptop will be give an IP address via the router's DHCP server for example 10.10.10.2/3

You see this is where i get so confused - please be patient with me.
im changing details (ip,subnet etc) in the properties for the wireless connection on my laptop.
I also have the option to configure the Wireless device but as i understand it has no built in DHCP(?) to configure ip address.
Really well and truly confused.

where i am at the moment - i have two networks showing on my laptop - 1 is the Wireless conection and the other is the wireless network card. I can also configure the wireless Dlan socket. What im confused with is what to configure on each of these. I have a strong signal strength when i manualy input an ip etc. But when i leave the "obtain ip auto" on i have limited or no connectivity.
Any help will be greatky received.

Whats the model number of the Dlan socket, and I'll look to see what it can and can't do.

What's the model number of the Dlan socket connected to the modem?

Have a look at the installation section at http://www.devolo.co.uk/uk_EN/produk...erkit-310.html

This shows a router so that your internet connection can be shared.

You need a router to share your internet connection.

Cable Modem --- Router --- DLAN Socket }--- DLAN Socket --- PC
.................................................. ...... }--- DLAN Socket --- Laptop

You could have purchased a wireless router to connect directly to the laptop, and thus not needing the wireless DLAN socket.

Look at image under section 4.2 (Home networking option 2).
Ignore the ADSL modem as this will be your Virgin cable modem.

so in your opinion - a Wireless Router would be the best idea - so it would go
Modem - Wireless Router - Dlan socket ------Dlan socket---PC
and the wireless router would handle the Laptop.
