High Definition Via Component Connection

For people like me who don't have a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connection on our TVs, I just wondered if anyone had managed to get high definition satisfactorily using component cables?

If they did, did they manage it without the SCART connections being disabled?

Any information greatly appreciated.TIA.

Hi there. I use component for my PJ. Works fine apart from no HD movies (due to copy protection). The SCART outputs are still disabled.

Cheers, ShadowTD, thanks for that. I suppose the moment you select High Definition by component in the settings, the SCARTs are disabled.

Pity really as I use the SCARTs to record programmes onto tape for my daughter who plays them on her VCR at her house. Never mind. Thanks again for your help.

As I understand it, the second scart used for VCR/DVD-R connections is still left enabled when the V+ output is set to HDMI or component...It's just the first scart and the RF out that are disabled.

The VCR scart is also disabled apart from when you archive something to DVD/VCR (as of the latest update, previously the VCR scart showed the same as the TV scart used to even in HD mode) - so you can still record programs and use the archive function to send it to a VCR or DVD recorder. You just can't record what you are watching on live television.

Therefore, you could still record programs for your daughter on the V+ box, and then go into the V+ menu and archive them to a VCR or DVD recorder :)

Hope this helps

That is barmy. I'm sure over here (in the US) you can watch HD movies via component (by component you mean CPrPb format). Most HD TVs are set up like that over here by the cable company when they install your cable box. Go figure.

That's surprising, considering it's the US that's primarily pushing all the copy protection technologies, such as HDCP that we are stuck with, around. From what I've read, they've been going to great lengths to plug the "analog hole" and lock their content (movies are one of the highest priorities) to HDCP protected HDMI

The 5 RCA cables is generally how an HD box is connected to HDTV over here. Thats what is in the box and the engineers use. If you want HDMI you have to buy your own cable.
I did that primarily to recycle the CPrPb cables into the back of my DVD player so I could use the progressive scan on that.
