Low Wifi Signal Strength
Hi,
I recently signed up for VM BB XL and knowing that the BB Modem would probably be installed downstairs I purchased a Linksys WRT54GC Compact Wireless Broadband Router 4 Ports 802.11g wireless router. I have my pc upstairs with a Belkin wifi pci card in it but unless I move the Linksys router to the bottom of the stairs I get a really bad signal and often can't connect at all. I didn't imagine i would have such probs as the distance from where I would ideally want the router (next to the tv in my front room) to the office up stairs is about 20-25 feet max with 1 or 2 walls in the way. Am I expecting to much or could I have set it up incorrectly? Thanks |
Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
Have you tried changing channel on the router?

Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
Do you live in a new house ? some new houses the plaster board has a metal backing causing it to stop mobile phone signal and wireless signals .Quite common in some new houses .Also some digi senders can have a effect on wifi signals :)

Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
also might be worth moving the ariel on the pci card about as i found i can move mine 1 cm from its position and my signal drops to half of what it was

Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
I my experience PCI wireless cards are poor. I have one (that i dont use) as the signal stength was so poor. However if i used a laptop in the same location as the PCI card the laptop has a full signal.

Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
thanks for the replies:
I haven't tried changing the channels but I will now. I live in an old house 100+ years. I will try moving the aerial around, what is the best position, straight? |

Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
Older houses have issues too, if the partition walls are made from breezeblock these are sometimes known to contain iron slag and so cut down propogation of signals.

Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
Interference from TV's, Microwaves, Fridge, Freezers and Radiators can also cause problems.

Re: Low Wifi Signal Strength
I bought one of these for my PCI belkin card and it made a huge difference to the stabilty of the link.
I have my PC upstairs and the router in the diagonally opposite corner of the house downstairs |
