he has written and book about enviromental issues and calls on big buisnesses andgoverments to take action to reduce carbon emmissions.

One of his big things at the moment that I have seen discussed elsewhere is standby buttons on tv sets. He wants companies to make TV sets them without the standby option and has started a petition as a call to action.

what do you think, do we need standby buttons? does it really make any difference or are we all using standby because we are lazy!!

How much energy does a CRT TV take when powering up from cold?
How many times is that TV turned on and off during a 24 hour period?
How does that compare with the energy use of that same TV during it's standby periods?

Then you have the information needed to decide which is better, standby or shutdown.
Can standby be changed so that it does the same as the off switch, but keeps the IR reciever on, so when you press the button on the remote, it simply trips a relay which then turns on the TV as if from a shutdown?

With a LCD TV, I take it they don't have the same standby running costs?

really interesting considerations , I'm just emailing some questions for the q and a session now why dont you email yours in, or I think you can just post them if you are registered.

I personally tend to turn things off at the wall, but this was more safety than enviromental.

I'm sick of people banging on about Climate change in this country, I recycle, I turn off TVs etc, I use energy saving bulbs etc etc etc etc etc etc

But USA and China, India and other emerging economies are eclipsing anything that our small pathetic little Island could manage.

I'd keep my veg running carbon neutral car, but at £185 a year to tax, I might as well keep my less (but still pretty green) enviromentally friendly other car as it's a year newer, costs the same to tax, and is a bit more fun to drive.

Course if I had more money, I'd have the option of buying a newer, less environmentally friendly car, and pay less tax for the privilage of destroying the planet.

The planet doesn't need saving, it will look after itself like it always has. A good excuse for taxes for our goverment though.

The planets habit of changing kills of types of animals and causes peroids of mass extinction. Man made Global warming could make this go much faster and make it even more dangerous.

Why don't we make nuclear powered massive industrial size C02 scrubbers?

I'm sure the technology exists.
