20 meg connection requiring new router
I have recently been bumped up to vm's20 meg connection however i have been told by a techie friend that i will need a new router possibly as my belkin wireless 54g only has a ten meg WAN port on it.
is this correct, as im not getting a 20 meg service through the router but when the pc is connected directly it is. any ideas on which modem is compatible with the 20 meg service cheers Trev |
Re: 20 meg connection requiring new router
Yes, that's definitely true, your router only has a 10Mb WAN port yet it's dealing with 20Mb broadband.
As for recommendations, i'm not sure. :) |

Here you go:

That stickie was very useful. Unfortunately, my router ( the Apple Airport Extreme) was not listed.
Though I'm getting good service from it now with 1 desktop and 3 wireless laptop computers connected I concerned that there may be problems when the 20 Mb service starts. Anybody out there with this router on the 20 Mb system care to comment please? TIA. |

Sure, LAN ports these days are usually 100Mbps, even 1000mbps, however WAN ports may still only be 10Mbps. And even if they are 100Mbps, most routers just don't have the CPU power to deliver that kind of data rate. |
