NTL250 with switch PC and xbox 360
I get the feeling i already know the answer to this one but thought i'd get some other advice before it goes on ebay lol
my modem is a NTL 250 i've just bought a netgear gig switch GS650 and i want to plug in my PC and a xbox 360 however when i do only ONE of them will work...which ever boots up first.....now i knowthe modem issues an ip address. i get the feeling you can't get a second ip address from the modem or am i wrong cheers guys and gals |
Re: NTL250 with switch PC and xbox 360
This is correct.
You need one IP for each device attached to the modem, and the modem itself can only issue ONE IP. Your simplest option is to get rid of the switch, and get a router. Basically, a router issues it's own IPs (usually in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254) to any PCs/Printers/Xboxs attached to it, and uses the IP from the modem for itself. It then manages traffic between your home network and the modem (this is called Network Address Translation) and essentially makes your network appear to be one device. Switches cannot do this. |
