On the look for router
Discovered my Belkin only sports a 10Mbs WAN connection and thus found my 8Mbs bottlencek on my XL package; so been on the lookout for routers with a 100Mbs socket. Having a bit of trouble finding ones with such, or with specs which actually detail the WAN port quantitively, rather than just labelling it Fast Internet.
So was wondering if anyone has a suitable router which supports the XL WAN speed? Will be searching in the interim, just thought I'd ask in case anybody using one already and could recommend it. Thanks :) |

http://ipcop.org/ http://ipcop.org/index.php?module=pn...CopScreenshots The main points are that it uses 10/100 lan cards so is more than capable of handling anything that Virgin throws at it for now. Any old pc will do from a 386 to a pent 4. When it is up and running no keyboard , mouse, monitor are needed. |
Re: On the look for router
Very intersting Solution, Bill, thanks. May have a use for my old Cyrixx II powered Book PC yet :) either that or the old celeron machine.
For reference purposes, have managed to find 1 possible commercial solution so far: http://www.lindy.com/uk/productfolde...5101/index.php Apologies to the mods for having this in incorrect section - thought it was internet service orientated because of the reliance on the specific VM broadband package. |
Re: On the look for router
I use a Linksys WRT54GS which copes well with 20 Mbps and would recommend over the Netgear I used to have (the latter seemed to need rebooting quite often).

and heres one of many cases you could put one of these in https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2007/09/17.jpg http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/prod...ode=CAH-MCE-SI it would be nice if i could also find a ready made liveCD with NAS and 2x1Gigabit basic bonding included. if he's going to buy any non cheap commercial router today its probably better to get a 1Gig router anyway to allow growth later. |

Thanks martin :)
I forgot to mention, looking ideally for wired variants. |
Re: On the look for router
you might find this thread interesting and learn how 3rd party firmware can help you etc.

Thanks, popper, I will have a butchers at that. Also good point about the gigabit router, may be worth keeping future exapnsions in mind. Would I be barking up the wrong tree with something along these lines? http://www.techstore.co.uk/browse.ph...dLineID=113511

or if theres a 3rd party firmware to increase the options you might want to add later, do a search and see, but that first link says Operating System : Linux so thats a good indication it might. heres a better page with more of its info http://www.ciao.co.uk/Linksys_4_Port...S4000__6616334 " Networking Connectivity Technology: Wired Integrated Switch: 4-port switch Data Link Protocol: Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet Switching Protocol: Ethernet Network / Transport Protocol: PPTP, L2TP, IPSec Routing Protocol: RIP-1, RIP-2, static IP routing Remote Management Protocol: SNMP 1, SNMP 2c, HTTP, HTTPS Performance: Firewall throughput : 800 Mbps Capacity: VPN tunnels (remote access) : 5 Status Indicators: Port status, power, status Features: Compliant Standards: IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.1x Expansion / connectivity Interfaces:
