Wireless speed with Belkin Pre-N Router

Hello All

Am hoping someone can help me out here. I have the Belkin pre-N router with a recent update to the Virgin 20mb line.

On using the speedtest here i get:
1st 512K took 406 ms = 1261.1 KB/sec, approx 10391 Kbps, 10.15 Mbps
2nd 512K took 360 ms = 1422.2 KB/sec, approx 11719 Kbps, 11.44 Mbps
3rd 512K took 375 ms = 1365.3 KB/sec, approx 11250 Kbps, 10.99 Mbps
4th 512K took 1125 ms = 455.1 KB/sec, approx 3750 Kbps, 3.66 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9278 Kbps, 9.06 Mbps

But obn using direct connected to the modem i get:
1st 512K took 187 ms = 2738 KB/sec, approx 22561 Kbps, 22.03 Mbps
2nd 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps
3rd 512K took 234 ms = 2188 KB/sec, approx 18029 Kbps, 17.61 Mbps
4th 512K took 250 ms = 2048 KB/sec, approx 16876 Kbps, 16.48 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 19562 Kbps, 19.11 Mbps

Any ideas why the speed is literally halfed using wireless? i followed sum instructions on here for DRTCP and setting TCP receive window to 64240 and MTU to 1500. But this has not helped at all.

Any other advice or recommendation would be great.

Many thanks

Re: Wireless speed with Belkin Pre-N Router

are you connecting wireless to it? is the wireless adapter pre N also?

Ive got a laptop and a PC connected.

The laptop is connecting using its own built in wireless 802.11 a/b/g and my desktop is connecting using a belkin pre-n card

while the 'TCP receive window' probably should have had some effect.... (perhaps it needs another higher value?, and you did that change to the laptop?),
theres your problem bottleneck right there.

although why it's topping out at 10Mbit is strange as 11n is backward compatible and can increase even 11g throughput a little above average generic 11g usually!

easyest thing/fix, buy all 11n MiMo for all your connected (laptop)machiines and get the asssumed 100Mbit+

it would be nice to see some users here confirm their 11n to 11n realworld throughput speeds and devices spec/make etc.

ah i can post again.

Can someone confirm whether or not i can get higher speed ie near 19mb over wireless??

im busy right now but ill re-post your pm and answer later... basicly the 11n should give far better speeds when connected to another 11n device....

without question , it should indeed be a lot faster.

Hello Popper

Sorry for the direct msg. But for some reason i cannot post on the forum.

Out of interest what should i rate should i set in DRTCP to get the ultimate speed for:
TCP receive window and
MTU

As mentioned my PC uses the Belkin pre-n card and it still the same speed.
the receive window and MTU are not really a fixed amount as such, you need to play around and read up on them and find the right ballance for your kit, the original setting are just generic, there exist apps that can test for you and set them as required but i dont know any off hand and havent googled....

Also should my Belkin pre-n actually give more than 10-11mb over wireless?

for sure, in the case of 'my desktop is connecting using a belkin pre-n card'

just did a quick search and the one i assume you have but all the same brand would have near the same speed i assume.

http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/belk...5.html?tag=sub
Data transfer rate : 300 Mbps

given they are both belkin, its reasonable to assume that you should be getting at least near a 3rd the advertised speed, so somewere in the 80-100Mbit speeds.

BUT, because you dont also have an 11n in the laptop thats means data flow between the laptop and the desktop is limited to 11G (perhaps +) speeds, but even then as i said, that still should be above 10Mbit as much as 22Mbit given the router is newest generation and presumably has a good CPU inside.

you should still be able to get close to the 20Mbit VM speed on the desktop 11n connection, if as you say the wired connection can do 19.11 Mbps.

somethings not right at your end by the sound of it......
