Hello, i have read lots of threads on here which seem to have the same problem as i have, but i still dont seem to be able to get the answer so i thought i would ask it here.

i have VM broadband which was 10 meg and now its 20 meg. i use a laptop always with wireless connection with a belkin 802 g router and internal card in the computer and the windows network speed says 54megbit etc. the max speed i get is only 7meg on but with wire i get up 18meg.

i basically just want to know i i go and buy the belkin N router and N usb card for the laptop will it for sure run at the full speed like the wired connection.

I just wanted to make sure because it costs about £170 which is alot. its just really annoyed to pay and get 20 meg but wireless only gives 7. thanks alot fr any help or advice.

Well wireless does introduce a bit of overhead but nothing like they drop you are seeing. When you say it works at 18 Mb/s on a wired connection, is that with the PC plugged directly into the VM cable modem or plugged into one of the LAN ports on the router. The reason I ask is that the speed sounds just like I would expect if the WAN port on the router was running at 10 Mb/s in half-duplex - but if that is the case then you should see the same speed with a PC plugged into the LAN ports.

Either way I'd investigate a bit further before committing to getting another router, I suppose you don't have any neighbours etc. connecting to your wireless system, do you?

hi thanks for replying so fast, im sure no one else is using it like neighbours, i have he security thing on etc. with the wire connection that is definately though the router and gets 18 meg so i dont know about those settings you mentioned.

Well that's one theory shot down then! If you're getting the faster speed through the router's LAN ports then the problem definately seems to be with the wireless part rather than a bottleneck at the WAN port end.

Try going into the setup and change the wireless channel used on the router, also try temporarily turning off the data encryption. There may be a bit of interference on the channel being used.

Thanks anyway, i have tried everything really, i tried to change the channel from 11 which it was on others, but then i cant get anything to work. maybe ill just have to try and faster router.
