PC powering itself on

Does any one have any suggestions on why a perfectly well behaved computer would start powering itself up after a random period less than an hour?

I noticed it on this morning when I came downstairs and now the damn thing won't stay switched off.

Thanks!

on in an hour! 12-05-2007 22:18

They can have the bandwidth, just leave the PC alone!

What he says.

You might need to make sure you have the latest Bios, some mainboards sometimes "forget" to include all the wakeon events, though this is rare.

I enabled wake-on-lan a while back as I switch it on from work. That said, it was the first suspect but I've tried disabling it and not seen any difference.

I'm wondering if it's developed a hardware glitch of some sort :(.

my silverstone media centre case has an iffy power button.... worth a thought?

That's a possibility - I think the power button has only been used about a dozen times since everything was shifted into the case (it came with an iMOn remote unit built in which includes a connection to the power switch) and most of those uses have probably been in the last 48 hours of so.

I might take the case apart tomorrow and check it if I haven't worked it out by then.

Check the batteries in the remote too. If they are on their way out it could be playing up.

Disconnect yourself from the net to eliminate that booting up your machine.

Also try using a different power socket to plug your PC into.

At the moment (fingers crossed) it seems to be working. I left it disconnected from the mains overnight and since then it doesn't seem to have done it's spontaneous power up thing.

It occurred to me that although I'd told the built-in NIC card not to respond to WOL, the motherboard was still providing it power even when shut down. Is it possible that got itself "confused" causing it to periodically power up the machine?

Mainboard remains powered, even when it's "off", provided it's still plugged in.

Re: PC powering itself on

Agreed, but the NIC doesn't necessarily have power. One of the things I had to do to get WOL working under Linux (this is an Ubuntu box) in the first place was alter the shutdown script to include an option to keep power to the NIC. I forgot to remove that when removing the WOL stuff.

TBH, I see it as academic.

I use my PC and leave it on 24/7, but if I turn it off, I turn it off at the wall.
