UBR1 Gateshead having issues?
Hi all,
Just posting too see if anyone is having any similar issues like this. I am connected to: cable.ubr01.gate.blueyonder.co.uk. I have ran several tests including Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test on my system. Here are a few results, of the quick test: Quote:

They don't know what is wrong, and have replaced the modem 3 times in the past 2 weeks. Here my modem stats: Scientific Atlanta Webstar EPC2100 r2 Downstream Channel: Downstream Status Operational Channel ID 2 Downstream Frequency 331000000 Hz Modulation 256QAM Bit Rate 10240000 bits/sec Power Level 0.7 dBmV Signal to Noise Ratio 37.8 dBUpstream Channel: Upstream Status Operational Channel ID 4 Upstream Frequency 29200000 Hz Modulation QPSK Bit Rate 384000 bits/sec Power Level 59.0 dBmVHere's what www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk had to say: Link Date of Speed Test: 2007-05-01 18:39:28 Download Speed: 185 kbps (23.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 359 kbps (44.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Thanks, Andrew. PS: I have just tested a download from Giganews, and am getting full speeds. What the hell is going on? They accidentally throttling the wrong ports or something? |
Re: UBR1 Gateshead having issues?
The upstream power level is beyond a joke, 59dB. That's your problem right there...
That to me indicates a problem with the cabling itself. |
Re: UBR1 Gateshead having issues?
But that wouldn't effect downstream, surely?

I appreciate your response and understand were you are coming from, however, the power level has been the same for the past 4 months or so now, and issues like this have just started in the past week or so, therefore, I don't believe that to the issue this time round. Thanks, Andrew. Also another BIG note is I can download from Giganews at 9.3 mb, so something funny is definitely going on here. |

When maxing my 10Mb i can see i'm using around 25-30k up at the same time. |

Well therefore, it would also affect my upload speed, which is currently 45.4k, which remains unaffected. Thanks, Andrew. |

However, is it possible there is simply high usage in your area? Ever tried these tests at around 1am or so? |

I am have set the speedtest test to run diagnostics and log them every hour cause an engineer is called tomorrow, but I have been told by 2nd line there are no issues at present on the UBR, and utilisation is currently, well 10 mins ago, sitting at 57%. So I am realy not sure whats going on here. Thanks, Andrew. |

Come on, that suggestion is so old now, I have already tested that and get roughly 120k with some fluctuation. Quote:
Thanks, Andrew. |

Seriously sounds like a capacity issue, even though it apparently isn't. Do you have any routers or anything? And which firewalls/anti-virus are you using? |
Re: UBR1 Gateshead having issues?
Have you tried using it i use it when there is problems with speed or ubr problems as you set to to look at certain point of the trace to see if there is lag .I was only trying to help :)

Yup, thats correct, speed of downloads from any browser, FF or IE, seems to be struggling to reach 150k, whereas, if I download something from Giganews using Newsbin, I get 9.3 MB. I am using a D-Link DI-604 Wired Router, with DHCP disabled, etc. AntiVirus is Kaspersky 6.0.2.621. No software firewall is used, they tend to be far to bloated nowadays. Thanks, Andrew. PS: NedKelly, didn't mean to sound nasty, read it then I think it did sound that way, so appologies, and I'm off in a strop now. |
Re: UBR1 Gateshead having issues?
Could you momentatrily remove the wired router and do a quick test or three? To see if that is causing your issues?
Also, do a quick test wihtout Kasperspy running, and without the router if the router is not causing the issue. I know i'm asking you to disable security for a minute or two, but it shouldn't really matter as long as you stick to well known legitimate sites: http://speedtest.net http://speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php Hopefully this may lead to a clue or two :) |
