UBR1 Gateshead having issues?

Hi all,

Just posting too see if anyone is having any similar issues like this.

I am connected to: cable.ubr01.gate.blueyonder.co.uk.

I have ran several tests including Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test on my system.

Here are a few results, of the quick test:

Test sequence: Quick test

Please note that these results are a snapshot of this particular moment. Run the test a few times to ensure maximum accuracy. Although the test has been constructed to be highly accurate, no guarantees can be made to the level of accuracy experienced in everyday use.

Test 1: Ping times to UK servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 30 ms (lower is better)

demon.net: 36.3 ms
bris.ac.uk: 39.3 ms
mirror.public-internet.co.uk: 61.8 ms

This result is much poorer than expected and should be investigated.

Test 2: Ping times to European servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 50 ms (lower is better)

apache.easy-webs.de: 54.5 ms
mir2.ovh.net: 45.7 ms
uni-erlangen.de: 58.7 ms

The results of this test indicate no problems.

Test 3: Ping times to east-coast USA servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 120 ms (lower is better)

mirror.cc.columbia.edu: 235 ms
apache.mirrors.northco.net: 226.7 ms
apache.mirror99.com: 142 ms

This result is much poorer than expected and should be investigated.

Test 4: Ping times to west-coast USA servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 160 ms (lower is better)

vancouver.ca: 250.3 ms
uci.edu: 207 ms
vancouver.ca: 303.3 ms

This result is much poorer than expected and should be investigated.

Test 5: Download speeds from UK servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 10240 Kb/s (higher is better)

zeniiia.linux.org.uk: 332 Kb/s

This result shows serious problems with your downloads, and should be investigated.

Test 6: Upload speeds to the Speed Test Server

Ideally, you should get a result of around 384 Kb/s (higher is better)

broadbandspeedtest.net: 236 Kb/s

This result is much poorer than expected and should be investigated.

Test 7: Packet loss en route to a UK server

Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)

mirror.inetc.co.uk: 8 %
zeniiia.linux.org.uk: 12 %

A large amount of packet loss has been detected. This should be investigated.

End of testing.

Apparently, when I call TS, all my calls are now routed straight to 2nd Line after having insane amounts of problems with my services.

They don't know what is wrong, and have replaced the modem 3 times in the past 2 weeks.

Here my modem stats:

Here's what www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk had to say: Link

Date of Speed Test: 2007-05-01 18:39:28
Download Speed: 185 kbps (23.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 359 kbps (44.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Thanks, Andrew.

PS:

I have just tested a download from Giganews, and am getting full speeds. What the hell is going on? They accidentally throttling the wrong ports or something?

Re: UBR1 Gateshead having issues?

The upstream power level is beyond a joke, 59dB. That's your problem right there...

That to me indicates a problem with the cabling itself.

But that wouldn't effect downstream, surely?

Hi,

I appreciate your response and understand were you are coming from, however, the power level has been the same for the past 4 months or so now, and issues like this have just started in the past week or so, therefore, I don't believe that to the issue this time round.

Thanks, Andrew.

Also another BIG note is I can download from Giganews at 9.3 mb, so something funny is definitely going on here.

It would when the modem has to reply to the server to say "yea, got that last packet, send more..." Or "Damn, missing packets 14,98,223 and 944, resend?". That's where the upstream comes into play when using downstream.

When maxing my 10Mb i can see i'm using around 25-30k up at the same time.

Hi,

Well therefore, it would also affect my upload speed, which is currently 45.4k, which remains unaffected.

Thanks, Andrew.

Wow, that seems odd, still, not impossible i guess. Unless i've got the spec wrong for QAM256.

However, is it possible there is simply high usage in your area? Ever tried these tests at around 1am or so?

Hi,

I am have set the speedtest test to run diagnostics and log them every hour cause an engineer is called tomorrow, but I have been told by 2nd line there are no issues at present on the UBR, and utilisation is currently, well 10 mins ago, sitting at 57%.

So I am realy not sure whats going on here.

Thanks, Andrew.

Hi,

Come on, that suggestion is so old now, I have already tested that and get roughly 120k with some fluctuation.

So, it seems on one thread you capable of 120k down, yet with 8 -10 threads (Newsgroups) you can hit 9.3Mb/s down?

Seriously sounds like a capacity issue, even though it apparently isn't. Do you have any routers or anything? And which firewalls/anti-virus are you using?

Hi,

Yup, thats correct, speed of downloads from any browser, FF or IE, seems to be struggling to reach 150k, whereas, if I download something from Giganews using Newsbin, I get 9.3 MB.

I am using a D-Link DI-604 Wired Router, with DHCP disabled, etc. AntiVirus is Kaspersky 6.0.2.621. No software firewall is used, they tend to be far to bloated nowadays.

Thanks, Andrew.

PS:

NedKelly, didn't mean to sound nasty, read it then I think it did sound that way, so appologies, and I'm off in a strop now.

Re: UBR1 Gateshead having issues?

Could you momentatrily remove the wired router and do a quick test or three? To see if that is causing your issues?
Also, do a quick test wihtout Kasperspy running, and without the router if the router is not causing the issue.

I know i'm asking you to disable security for a minute or two, but it shouldn't really matter as long as you stick to well known legitimate sites: http://speedtest.net http://speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php

Hopefully this may lead to a clue or two :)
