News On The 4MB Upgrade?

Anyone know if the 4MB tier will be upgraded anytime soon?

I've just off the phone after getting my "free" upgrade on to LTY7.

Before moving from the 4Mb up to the 10Mb (end of May for 20Mb he said) I asked when 4Mb would go up.

He told me around September time.

I have asked many people who i trust and are in the know. They have heard nothing about any upgrade other than the 10 to 20 meg. Sorry

I think it will be unlikely that 4MB will be upgraded by much, if at all. VM will see the 20Mb package as leverage for up-sell, and for attracting new business.

sucks I know, but you have to see this from VM's perspective, there is more money in Broadband than TV.

But upgrade to what?

20MB is currently only 2 quid more than 10MB, what incentive would there be for pushing up the speed of 4MB for the same money?

I'd leave it as it is, level entry, mid and "OMG should it be this fast?"

Yes i would agree with you but Vigin should lower the price of the entry level and mid packages to make them a more attractive alternative to what other companies are offering.

It's a bit daft to have a top tier of 20MB and a middle tier of 4MB.

Perhaps, but as so many people have said on here, If 4 goes up to 10 after 10 goes up to 20, they'd drop their package down to stay on 10, at a cheaper cost. If VM have realised this, then they know they'd be shooting themselves in the foot with that, loosing chunks of income as people downgrade.

Once the network is upgraded people staying in the the same price band will cost VM what ????.
As far as I am aware 10 meg / 4 meg and 2 meg staying at same price.

I am guessing VM will do something like 5/10/20 packages at some point.

I've actually heard someone shout that after they speed checked their new FiOS install... 21Mb down, 2.5mb up at that point. They deafened me.

I think you are looking at VM in isolation. The truth is, they are in a competitive marketplace, so whether they like it or not, they will have to either upgrade speed or drop the price. Otherwise they'll just lose customers.

4MB for £25 is expensive now compared with many other ISP's, so I think they will upgrade the speed of both entry level and mid packages at some point. Something like 4MB/8MB/20MB will maintain the current differential between packages.

If you take into account quality it's probably the best value though... Shame not many people do.

Remember the adverts "Cable, if you can, you should." It's so damn true, yet people ignore it :p:

I agree my VM internet has been solid ever since I got it. :tu:

But... I do think VM should either upgrade the speed or lower the price as ADSL is now becoming as quick and reliable as my 4Mb line.

abailey152 25-04-2007 18:42

Re: News On The 4MB Upgrade?

Account quality....mmmm. After the week of hell in Stoke with terrible connection speeds along with no information and worse still, lies from TS(India and UK) there would be a few people on here who may argue that point!

But I do take your point. Generally we get nearly max connection speeds most of the time.

However, these things do not stand still. ADSL is improving giving more reliable higher speeds at a given price. VM need to keep upgrading to stay in touch in order to keep existing customers and to attract new customers.
