Migration number?
Can anyone advise if a migration number is required when moving from VM BB/phone to another ISP?
I am trying to set up a Talktalk ADSL modem for an elderly neighbour but neither the LINK nor ACT lights are lit on the Talktalk modem; it is plugged into the phone line. The existing NTL modem however works fine (the account runs until 1st May) which makes me wonder if in fact the phone line has been switched from NTL to BT. Not sure if NTL/VM do use the BT exchanges so not sure if this problem is down to 'tagging' or not. Any help, apart from 'don't use talktalk' appreciated. She has already signed up for Talktalk. |
Re: Migration number?
You need to plug the ADSL modem into the BT line, not the VM phone socket...
She does actually have a BT line doesn't she? You can't switch a cable phone line to BT, she needs an actual BT wire into her house in order to get TalkTalk. They should have taken her through this when she signed up... |

Thanks for the reply Cobbydaler.

She has been on NTL for a number of years but before that did have a BT phone so there could be both BT and NTL phone sockets fitted. The phone socket being used for the PC is an extension in the bedroom which makes life a little difficult in tracing back to where it connects to the main phone socket. Guess I could ring 151 and see which fault company answers :) |
Re: Migration number?
Well, I'm not too far from you & my cable phone socket has the Cable & Wireless logo on it...
Can you see a BT wire going into the house? |
Re: Migration number?
I think talkTalk send out a sort of welcome letter that advises when your BT line should be enabled as well as advising your ids, etc. Surely they couldn't do that unless there actually is a BT line?

You'd hope so. I don't see how she could've even signed up for TalkTalk without an active BT line. |

You will have to have ported your NTL number to BT before talk talk can activate there services or have an active BT line. I suppose either way the active BT line is required. Is the NTL phone socket still active. if it is then you need to contact talk talk to see what is going on here.. |
Re: Migration number?
Just had chance to go back and check things out, problem identified.
The bedroom telephone extension cable had been cut, so despite it looking as if it was connected in fact it wasn't. The neighbour did say that she had a dial tone on the bedroom phone but that was on a cordless phone, the base unit was connected to the main BT socket. Hopefully all will go well once I get a new phone extension cable. Thanks for all the advice. |
