NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
Hi all, I thought NTL was a dim memory but it has reared it ugly head again, this time in the form of a customer and his webspace.
I have created a site for him, I use Dreamweaver to create and also use the built in upload facility; simple yes!. Oh! no not with NTL... I have my customers username and original password. I have the settings FTP: upload.ntlworld.com username: is correct password: is correct I have tried pretty much every combination I can see to connect to this webspace with no luck. these are my settings: http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...tpsettings.gif http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ewallprefs.gif http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...rvercompat.gif http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...w_ftperror.gif I am on here because I have tried contacting NTL with no luck; i now hum that 'most annoying tune they play while you wait' and find these people the most unprofessional and frustrating I have ever had the displeasure come into contact with. And I class myself as a very plaicd person; so laid back I'm near horizontal, to coin a friends description of me but this company really annoy me. This should be so easy, I know I have the settings correct because I pulled my old files out from when I was with them a few years ago.. I have tried several FTP clients including CuteFTP, Voyager FTP, Crush and WSftp non work. I have tried ftp, sftp, disabled, enabled, I can get to the web address but not the ftp part... zip, nada, nothing. I have tried logging in via IE7, Opera and Firefox using these formats:
Opera brings up FTP busy, IE7 doesn't even bother to start to load, and Firefox tries to load but never does. If anyone has any insight please help, maybe I've made a typo but can't see it, my brains gone to mush humming that song all day. I've read in another forum that NTL will only allow uploading to webspace from an NTL line? that can't be true surely, if it is I'm glad I got out and I'm sure its illegal. I am on an ADSL line, I connect to other customers webspaces and hostings all the time with little trouble so i know its not hardware error, software error or typo's |
Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
Have just double checked my Virgin (NTL) website and all working correctly. Even tried the ftp://user.name:password@upload.ntlworld.com/ way of getting in and it worked.
Can only assume that as it is an ISP homepage it will only work from a Virgin (NTL) line. My guess is the other websites you can upload to are not ISP related. May well be wrong here. It certainly appears that unless you are using their network you cannot get access. |
Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
If this is true "you can only log into NTL webspace from an NTL Line" it becomes a ridiculous scenario.
So, I have to download the website to a cd or flash drive, go to my clients PC to upload his website and when he wants it editing go back, download it, go back to my PC, edit it, come back and upload again!! What a farce! NTL are getting to be more and more of a JOKE! I will suggest he swap service providers and recommend mine; Eclipse, one of the best ISP's around. you actually get something called Service. Or I'll have to get a £3000 laptop, transfer all my software, get a Hymer camper Van and sleep over. :disturbd: |
Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
afraid that is correct you wont be able to access the webspace from a non ntl/virgin BB connection there are other sites that you can if like upload too but i expect you prefer to use the ntlworld one
[not sure if using a ntl/virgin proxy would work most likely not? just an idea mind you] |

a) Freeloaders setting up PAYG accounts to host their sites and not paying VM a penny for the service. b) Foreign racketeers setting up dummy PAYG accounts and using the webspace to host child porn, phishing sites and the like. |
Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
Why not just get your "customer" to pay for hosting? It doesn't cost much and the NTL/ VM webspace isn't meant for anything other than personal websites anyway. Anything commercial or bandwidth intensive would be better of on a proper hosting system.

Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
I agree with the 'paying for hosting' side of things and have already suggested this to him. To be honest I prefer to set up hostings, makes it easier for me to admin, and use scripts and PHP etc. I have extolled the virtues of a small fee per month but its a no-go.
I'll give it another go, as I'm seeing the client later to review the site, but as he rightly states the free space isn't really free is it! it comes with the deal. I can see both points of view and while I think its a good idea to stop these scammers the little man always has to suffer. I still really can't believe I can't upload from my PC. I do some small personal websites for people and quite a few use NTL but I've always sent them the site zipped up for them to upload via a browser. Still just means i'll have to charge NTL clients a bit more for the extra hassle. Saying all that I see a business opportunity here and am going to look into web hosting for people on NTL and the like that want business websites. Hey I could be on Dragons Den soon trying to explain why I need £250,000 and how I have valued my new company at £1.5million even though I have no assets lol :erm: PS: many thanks for the input guys and girls very much appreciated, at least i know what i can do now. |
Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
If he is running a busiuness site then he shouldn't be doing that on his VM space as far as I know.

Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
better hope your created website doent use CGI eather, as the ex-C&W/ex-NTL webspace doesnt allow even that, makes it almost useless for anything other than static html, will they ever allow it in the future who knows?..
just to be clear, you are NOT using i.am.the.user@ntlworld.com as the user name are you ,its i.am.the.user and you have already tryed with a bog standard ftp client to connect and failed?. |
Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
It's probably against the Terms of Use for the web space, but anyway if the site is for any sort of business it is worth paying a certain amount of cash for some web space as the NTL stuff has no features anyway

Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
Hi all, Popper: as for username I used to have ntl BB and yes I just used the the first part of the email addy, I thought that VM might have changed things slighty and I was missing something small.
Zeph and Paul: Re: usage policy; All I could find was this subsection on webspace. http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...ble/terms.html Quote:
Thanks guys for the heads up re usage. :D I have tried to load a page up from my clients PC and lo' and behold it uploaded. I tried all the methods I had previously used on my workstation and all worked. So there we have it non ntl'lers are blocked from uploading to an ntl webspace. Thanks for all the help, much appreciated. Hope this helps others |
Re: NTL Webspace settings for DW (I know...)
Like we said, if you aren't on your VM connection you cannot upload to the server. Seing him onto a cheap hosting account, it will make your life easier and open up more possibilities for his site.
