Newbie here with simple question, i think

Ive been reading on forum and found out lots of info, but there is one question i cant realy find answer to

I already have a wireless router etc and 2 computers using that signal in house, but im looking to extend the signal to my flat which is approx 300-400m away in next street, instead of getting another wireless network setup there i was wondering if its possible to take one of the computers over there and receive signal, i know i wont be able to with current setup, so what do i need to upgrade? Do i need to upgrade the wireless router with bigger antenna and transmit signal further or can i get a bigger antenna to receive the signal already being sent?

I would prefer to be able to just pick up the signal with a stronger antenna than muck about with the router as im not that good with computers, and will this compromise my security on anyway??

You'd have to get a better antenna and also see if you can max the signal up a bit.
How you do this will dpeend on the type of router you have.

Although you may get this to work, you will have to then secure your wireless network to stop anyone connecting to it.

Also note that VirginMedia do not authorise you to share one connection between different properties. This is up to you but just so you know.

ok im not with virgin media mate, my router is Safecom SW-BAR 5400, well thats what it says underneath it, so how do i go about maxing up signal? and what antenna do i upgrade on the router? is it impossible to get better antenna to pick it up then?

Some people release unofficial firmware that has better connection settings.
You'd have to search for your router firmware or if you can't find anytihng see if your routers manufacturer has anything on their website.
