What router to buy? help please
Hi guys,
Which router do you recommend that I buy? I currently am using a Linksys WRT54G V5 which is a shocker of a router. It can't handle many active connections at all without it hanging.....I found out this was the cause of all my troubles with torrents timing out all the time and my internet falling over ! Please can somebody recommend me a router, need it to support the following:- P2P such as DC++ Utorrent and Azureus Cable Modem (I am with Virgin Media with a 10mbit connection) Good for gaming (I play Counterstrike Source) I need to make sure I get a router that won't freeze when running torrents, I'm really sick and tired of all the hassle I've had with routers. Hope someone can help me? I've been thinking about buying a Netgear Router....I've been put off of Linksys for life now, bought 2 Routers and they both suck. the WRT54G V5 and the BEFSR41 Thanks In Advance. Simon |
Re: What router to buy? help please
Our Netgear runs without hitch here, it's strange that you have had issues with yours as so many people pimp the Linksys as THE router to use.

Can your Linksys support that custom firmware that does the rounds?

Re: What router to buy? help please
Simcut i have the same problem as you, i have the same router as you. Its a pain in the **** in it?
I used to use DC++ alot but now i log into dc++ and join a channel i cant even get the search up, even if i have 20 channels open and search for something simple like UB40 Red red wine it wont show nothing, its pathetic. I can manage ok with Torrents for some reason. I use torrent leech and bitcomet mostly. I notice that Yahoo messenger disconnects after about 4 minutes and every 4 minutes after that, not tried it while not running MSN at the same time though. I didnt buy this linksys though so i was in the dark as to whats the best one for the job. |

Aye, I've tried the DD-WRT Firmware but I have the same issues.
Btw, I can help you with DC++ setup, drop me a PM ;-) :) |

Re: What router to buy? help please
The problem with the default Linksys router firmware is that it doesn't close down connections quickly. Torrents work by throwing out masses of connections in the hope that something will stick. This eventually gums up the router's memory, and eventually grind to a halt.
The answer is in use of third party firmware, but also in configuration of the firmware, and having sensible settings on your PC's software. The DD-WRT firmware, v23 or later, can be downloaded from here: You then need to change some settings: * Enter the following values at 'Web-Admin -> Administration -> Management -> IP Filter Settings' * Maximum Ports: 4096 * TCP Timeout (s): 300 (decrease if you have many TCP connections) * UDP Timeout (s): 300 (decrease if you have many UDP connections) * Save Settings and then Reboot Router In your torrent clients try limiting the number of active torrents and also the number of connections. On 4 meg I've found something like 100 connections, 4 torrents and 20KB/s upload is about right. The upload doesn't want to be much more than 80% of your maximum capability. Once I've made those adjustments, I've found my Linksys WRT54GS has been running with torrents nice and happily. |
Re: What router to buy? help please
Thanks Rob, your post was very helpful. I have changed the settings on my router and in utorrent and I will have to see if it runs any better (even though I've never had any problems). :)

D-link DGL-4300. Handles loads of connections and never locks out - ever.
