Linksys BEFSR41 is capping my internet?

I upgraded to 10mb service yesterday. Doing various speedtests i noticed the speeds hadnt changed, although logging into my modem i could see that had been upgraded to the 10mb service.

So doing the speed tests over wireless, i decided to wire myself up. Getting no better results @ about 4mb. So i decided to plug my modem straight to my laptop via ethernet. Wollah i get 10mb service!

I have a BEFSR41 that has a 10mbit rated WAN port, but this clearly is underperforming as im barely getting half of that.

Does that mean its time now to get myself a new router??
I have seen people saying that some routers have a 100mbit WAN rating but only perform at 15mbit. I want to make the most of the 20mbit when it arrives. Any suggestions for a router?

Thanks :)

a 10MBit WAN Port won't make 10MBit as it will most likely be Half-Duplex so the most you will ever see from it is about 6MBit (Inc TCP/IP Overheads etc) so if you want the Full 10Meg you will need a new router I'm afraid. As for 100MBit Ports only performing @ 15MBit... no... 15 MegaBYTES but not 15MBit

Thanks for the reply,
What's the 15mb measuring though. Is that 15mb/s transfer rate on a 100mbit connection?

Just to point out, there are several versions of that router, although I don't know the exact details its concievable some are better performers than others

i used to get about 7.6meg on my old cmx modem and that only had 10Meg port

hi all, thanks for the great answers and support.

i too have a problem that is similiar to the first person that started this thread. i have a befsr41 router linked to a 16 port switch (ezxs16w purchased in 2002); although i can't verify the version, i know that i've been using the befsr41 router since the year 1999/2000. my cable service was recently upgraded to 10 MB service but the speed test i perform show me that i can only get speeds of around 4 to 6 mbs going through the router. connecting directly to the cable modem allows me to get the 10mbs service.

i'm assuming that i have to upgrade my router, would i have to upgrade the switch (ezxs16w) too? does anyone know? thanks.

Nice bump there :) :welcome:
A quick google for ezxs16w suggests that it is a 10/100 switch.
Therefore, as long as the new router has 10/100 ports they will talk at up to 100MBit, which should be sufficient to satisfy your shared 10Mbit connection.

As downquark1 has pointed out there are several versions of this router.
You would be best going to the linkysys site and upgrading the router's firmware.

I had to retire a V.1 of this router as it would not handle 10Mb. IIRC I tried a firmware upgrade without any real improvement. I suspect the real limitation is hardware-related, possibly processor speed.
