Cannot access certain websites

Hi there,

Am on 4Mb VM Broadband and have had no problems until recently. Now, when I try to navigate to certain websites I get a Connection Error (404). If I refresh several times, I occasionally get access. However, most sites are unaffected.

This forum is one of the sites that is! I can view the list of threads but as soon as I try to open one I get the error. This has only recently started and it is not my firewall (I have disabled it and tried pages), and my settings are all the same in IE. Firefox Portable (installed on my USB) also has the same troubles.

Can any one shed any light on what might be the problem? I may not get back to anyone until tomorrow as I can only read these threads at work!!!

Thanks in advance
Neil

Proxy set in either browser? Have you rebooted your SACM or STB? (Stand alone cable modem or set top box)

Hi,

No, there is no proxy set in either browser. I have rebooted the modem but not the set top box. Come to think of it, this only started occurring since we upgraded to V+ and had the old box moved upstairs. I didn't realise resetting the STB would help - I shall give that a go tonight. Will resetting the V+ box lose my recorded programs and do I just press the reset button?

Thanks.
Neil

How are you connected? SACM? If so then you do not need to touch the V+ box as it's on a seperate feed. You may need to call VM to get your levels etc checked as the new install may have upset the balance a bit.

Yes, I have a SAM (Motorola Surfboard thingy as I recall). Will resetting the old Telewest box (now upstairs) help?

It might be a local transparent proxy issue (if yours are still running). Can you try specifying a proxy to see if forcing the browser to use one works?

Thanks for the help so far. I have downloaded a trial of Anonymizer and with the IP Anonymity set on, I can access all the websites.
If I disable it, I am back to square one and cannot access this and certain other sites.

What does this prove/mean? And can it easily be rectified?

Sounds like a DNS server issue to me, and, iirc, Anonymizer uses it's own protected DNS servers, which is why the problem clears up once the program is running.

Check your network connection )TCP/IP properties) and see if it's set to obtain a DNS server address automagically or if there are any specified.

Thanks for that.

I have checked the settings that I could find (just migrated to Vista - part of the problem???) and nothing seems amiss. The problem is still ongoing though. It's starting to drive me mad now!!!

Any other ideas???

All help gratefully received!

Neil
