PLEASE HELP - My router won't keep my CPU & PS3 connected...
 

Can anyone help?

I'm having trouble keeping my CPU and my PS3 connected to the internet at the same time.

For the longest, I've disconnected the modem (let it reset) and then plugged in the PS3 and that worked fine. But today I decided I didn't want to do that anymore and bought a router (a 5 port Network Hub) model # NH1005-WM.

So, I plug everything up, but only the CPU connection works. PS3 is doing the same thing it did when I first bought it. It cannnot find the IP address. So, I decided to unplug the router from my CPU, reset the modem and try it that way. (THE OLD WAY)

That worked for about 5 minutes. Had both (CPU and PS3) running an internet connection at the same time. But, all of a sudden the CPU told me I had "limited connectivity" and now I'm back to square one.

My set up:

telephone wire >>> ARRIS Modem (mod# TM402P/110) >>> 5 port Network Hub (model # NH1005-WM) via ETHERNET CORD into UPLINK port >>> PS3 wired connection via ETHERNET CORD port 3 (not the 5th port that's disabled because of UPLINK)


Any suggestions? BTW, I don't want a wireless connection.

a network hub is not a router it can only allocate 1 ip address at a time. For this to work your system needs to be set up as so... Modem >>> PC(internet connection sharing on) >>>>>hub>>>>>PS3

I'm guessing I need another ethernet port because I can't figure out how to run the connection from the CPU to the HUB.

I only see on ethernet port on the rear of the CPU.

is the modem ethernet only then? if so yes you need a second network adapter in your pc. Where did you buy the hub? wont they take it back and replace it with a router?

I see a USB port 2.0 on the back of it also. I may have to try that.

But the box clearly says "hub" and I'm thinking I should've gotten the one that said "router".

I still have the Walmart receipt. So, i'll try again this morning.

Yes, I am from the US.

So, now I've taken the time to purchase a router but I'm having problems connecting to the internet on my PC.

I had to disconnect it just to get back to these forums.

Not sure what the problem is, but I think it has something to do with Windows Vista

We are a UK based forum familiar with the UK cable based networks. There probably aren't many differences to the setups "over the pond" but who knows?

When swapping whatever is connected to the modem, you normally have to power the modem off, else it cannot "see" whatever the new device is directly connected.

Make sure your network card settings and borwser are set with everything auto, rather than having any fixed IP or whatever. If you have a firewall on the PC, turn it off for now, while you try for a connection, you can always get it back later.

I just noticed that.

The good news is, after about 2 hours of set up and a call to linksys, I have both PC and PS3 online.

For anyone that's having the same problem.

1st: make sure you purchase the correct item: Router instead of a Hub.
2nd: I'm running Windows Vista Home w/ a Comcast Cable internet connection
3rd: unplug cable modem (remove battery if needed) from the wall outlet
unplug ethernet cord leading from modem to PC
plug that ethernet cord from back of PC into Router (mine is marked INTERNET)
attach enclosed cord from router (one of the free ports with a number above it) to your PC
attach another ethernet cord from router (second free port with a number above it) into your PS3
4th: Plug modem back into wall, plug router into the wall
5th: run router's set-up CD (Windows Vista gave me fits with this, but a linksys operator was able to trouble shoot.)

I was told to hit the start button on my task bar and in the search field, I entered the word: command
That brought up a black box with some text. I was told to type in: ipconfig
Once that ran, I was told to type in ping (space) 168.245.1.1 (router's default IP address)
Closed that black box

Based on my situation the router needs to clone your MAC address. So the operator had me enter the default IP address of the router into the address bar of an explorer page.

I had a ton of trouble with this, since my Internet service would not work after connecting the router. I simply reset the router, (held in reset button for 30 seconds) opened an explorer page and entered the router's default IP address into the address bar ( ex: 168.245.1.1) It worked, and I didn't complain!

I was prompted by a pop up to enter an account name and password. Leave the account name BLANK and enter ADMIN as the password.

That brought up a set up page for the router. Once there, I clicked on the "MAC Address Clone" link on the top of the page.

Once there, I had to "enable" the Mac Clone service by toggling a dialog box. Once I selected enable, the Mac address auto-filled and I pressed the "Clone your PC MAC" button.

After that, I minimized that screen and opened a new internet explorer page and was online.

I then checked the online status on the PS3 and I was signed in.


Hopefully that helps and doesn't confuse anyone.

Nice one dude that is all pretty much standard information. As you found out you do not really need a set up cd a simple run into command prompt will get you there. Im glad you got it all sorted in the end :)
