Why is this download so fast?
Not that I'm complaining, just wondering how it works.
When I do a backup of my webspace (with i-web solutions) it downloads to my computer. Its the speed of the download that leaves me gobsmacked. I'm on the 4Mb service with VM and for about a year now have had rubbish browsing and downloads. Usually the download manager in firefox tells me I'm downloading something at about 80kB/sec (that's usually the max I can get) but when I download the backup it starts at about 5600kB/sec. I look at it in wonder as the megabytes download at about 5 per second. This carries on for the first 150megs or so and then drops to 700/800kB/sec up to about 250megs and then for the last 20 or 30 it goes back down to the 80 or so kB/sec. Its great - 250/300MB in under two minutes. Can anyone explain why it does this - and more importantly why can't my everyday browsing and downloading be just as quick? When I log in to the web hosting control panel I have to use an address with a :8443 at the end which I assume is different from the usual html browsing? Like I said, I'm not complaining that its so fast, but I am curious to find out how it works. Thanks. |
Re: Why is this download so fast?
Well firstly that is one hell of a large website you have:confused: Maybe ime reading something wrong here your mentioning up to 300mbs ??? Most websites are only a few megabytes maybe no bigger than 10mb for a seriously large website. Unless your using media such as movies or sound/music.
As for 8443, this is a port protocol, a protocol used for sharing data between computers. |
Re: Why is this download so fast?
I'm on the Windows Basic package which gives me 300MB of space - currently its almost full of pictures I took while in Australia (www.murfituk.com/australia if you're interested).
It is a proper paid-for web hosting package, not the free space you usually get from your ISP. If :8443 is a protocol for sharing data between computers I'm still not sure how it can be so fast. Its still using my ntl connection to get the data onto my computer. |
Re: Why is this download so fast?
8443 is just the port used for the control panel normally its a https address
are you doing abackup from the control panel or just downloading stuff via ftp? its quite possible that their is compression going on which increases the speed of downloads easynews offer compression on headers which basically means you wil lsee faster speeds than what your conenction is |
