Linksys WRT54GX2 with VM 10mb Broadband

Hi there,

I have just got the 10mb package from VM and I have noticed in speed tests that my wireless router seems to be limited the results of the speed tests such as speedtest.net and robin d walkers speedtest.

The router i have can be found here http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...=0458039789B14

While the pc is connected via an ethernet cable to the router, I get a consistent 10mb speed, however when connected to the wireless, my speed can (obviously) vary depending on the channel i run it on. I used netstumbler and there are over 10 wireless access points nearby, so changing the channel has a strong effect. I went through all 12 channels and the best I could get was 6mb, while the worst was that I couldnt even connect to the router!

I am using the laptop with built in wireless. However I have tried the pc upstairs which has the matching network card for the router, which is essentially then meant to offer 108mbps, using MIMO etc. Ironically however, it actually doesn't get past 4mb instead!

What I would like to know is if anyone else has this router and if they are able to get the full 10mb, in which case I will know that it is local wireless interference, or that other people have this problem and that it could be hardware limitation of the router!

have you tried hard wiring it in rather than wireless to test the speeds? could very well be inteferance causing your issue

I'm fairly confident that the OP did :p: :disturbd:

I'd suspect that the number of wireless AP's in the vicinity would be the most likely cause of the problem.

Not sure there is much that you can do about it if you cannot find a free channel, maybe look at homeplug or running in cat5 if the machines you want to connect are desktops (theres nothing to stop you using it with a laptop its just it wouldn't be as portable as wi-fi)

Hey guys, thanks for the replies!

After a bit more channel hopping, I found that with my laptop I get a consistent 6mb, while with the computer upstairs with the better wifi card, I can get 8-10mb depending on interference. So for the upstairs pc at least, it's definately the amount of AP's in the vicinity, which is fine as it means I don't have to replace my hardware! For the laptop I would imagine its just the constraints of the built in wifi chip but again the other AP's could be causing limitation as well.

I wish for this upcoming 802.11N standard, they would have changed the frequency that they work on as clearly 2.5ghz is getting saturated in my area!

well there is 802.11a that works on 5ghz but that would be a lot of new kit, also don't see many 802.11a routers in the UK, and i think the US ones use channels that aren't allowed to be used in the UK without a licence.
