SKY: Bad download speeds... Upload faster than download.

Hi Everyone.

My router reports that my broadband synced at 3.6Mbps.

But download from websites give me around a 74kBps transfer rate.

Al the speed tests give me same sort of reults and I get...

Date 31/03/07 01:46:06 Speed Down 613.60 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps ) Speed Up 639.87 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
Showing my upload is faster than my download!

Anyone else having slow download speeds? I am on the MAX package.

EDIT: Just tired downloading a file and got this speed.

Sorry for colour loss I saved as a GIF by accident.

Speed tests are not exactly reliable.

Indeed I agree... but the things I download agree on the speed tests. I'm getting approxmate 600kbps/700kbps download speeds!

Just logged into Virgin and that same file I downloaded gave me these speeds...

If i continue to get these speeds (i'll give them slack and a couple of months) will I be able to cancel? I work in IT and need faster broadband!

Is the support British or Indian? Indian call centres hate me as they usually end up shouting at me.

Is'nt sky ADSL through a BT line:confused: ..why are you reporting a Sky problem anyways on a cable forum, you are in fact subject to the norm BT problems of Broadband connections.
I really think you should move over to VM, certainly more reliable and faster despite what people report.

It's in the generic "Other ISPs Discussion" area ;)

You should find out info before posting something like that

As this is ADSL you may find that the speed is limited by two factors,

A) the distance you are from an exchange
and
B) The quality of your in home telephony wiring.

For A, you cant do squat about it, for B) you can.

To check, move (if possible) your ADSL router right to your BT master socket, it looks like this:-

http://www.zensupport.co.uk/KBResour...r_socket_2.jpg

Then switch on your router and see what it connects / downloads at, if its (significantly) faster at downloading you may have internal wiring issues on your telephony cable.

To check how far from the exchange you are and what speeds you should expect - goto http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php and put in your post code, then when the results show up click the Locality tab and it will show you your straight line distance from the exchange. Anything more than 2km and your speeds will drastically reduce.

You can also go here, http://212.23.23.177/calc.htm, and put in the details for your router to check what you should be getting based on the noise on your line.

Router stats? Attenuation? Noise margin?

Are you using ethernet or wireless?

Just to add to that.... you need to take the two screws out & remove the faceplate (the lower section)... this will reveal the BT Test Socket, which is what you want to try the router on, not simply the Master.
