128bit WEP question
I have a Win98 machine with a belkin 802.11b wireless adaptor and a WinXP machine with a Linksys 802.11g wireless adaptor - And a WRT54G router connected to my ntl250 CM.
The router is set for 128bit WEP encryption and the WinXP machine connects without any problems. However, the Win98 machine fails because the encryption is not correct. I have generated the encryption code from the same passphrase on both machines, but the Win98 machine does not connect. Should the be anything different with encryption with Win98 v WinXP or the Belkin software v the Linksys software? Thanks |
Re: 128bit WEP question
Try finding an update to your Wireless Card, using this method I've gotten WPA working on Windows 98 before :)

Re: 128bit WEP question
128 bit WEP may be too much for the win 98 machine. Start off with 40 bit WEP, that is the baseline that they both should work to and is secure enough for most networks.

Re: 128bit WEP question
Zeph & GeoffW - thanks for your responses.
Because the Belkin wireless adaptor on the Win98 machine is so old, there are no newer updates than what I am already using. As for 40bit WEP, I don't remember seeing this as an option (only 64 or 128). I will try 64 and see how I get on. I will also try making a note of the actual hex code on the WinXP machine and see if typing that directly in on the Win98 machine makes any difference. Thanks. |
Re: 128bit WEP question
Did you get it working? If not can you connect without the encryption switched on?
